It was with great interest that I read your recently published article, “De-Homosexualizing the Catholic Church” by Professor Carlin. I am afraid his survey of the landscape is supported by an abundance of evidence- much of which has yet to come out, but Professor Carlin’s apparently now deeply-held conviction that the solution to the problem is to ordain married men to the priesthood, one that he apparently arrived at within the last few days after reading a few articles about the Cardinal McCarrick scandal, ignores a mountain of history, reason, sociological research and the Church’s own understanding of the nature and function of the priesthood.
Has professor Carlin examined the history of the emasculation of the priesthood and how we got to the situation we are in today? Has he examined logical arguments for the celibate priesthood and why homosexuality in the priesthood has become the huge problem it is today, such as when the priest shares his rightful duties with lay men and women, that he is in effect sharing his spouse, and that this naturally results in dissatisfaction with his state in life and a turning to more worldly pleasures? Unfortunately, all this is ignored in professor Carlin’s article, and the practice of a celibate clergy is portrayed as merely something that more traditionally-minded Catholics are attached to rather than something that is divine in origin and serves an integral function. Professor Carlin’s observation that “The changes introduced by Vatican II were relatively minor, but these minor departures from tradition proved to be a tremendous shock for many Catholics, including many priests and nuns” is a woefully inadequate summary of what has amounted to a practically unrelenting assault on the priesthood and the Eucharist within the Church and society in modern times, but particularly over the last 50 years. None of this is given even a passing mention. It seems that to Professor Carlin, there are just (previously fellow) pious Catholics who are fond of the tradition who won’t understand the change- a change that will produce abundant fruit in no time. We’ve heard this all before.
Therefore, I recommend that the Catholic Thing reprint Fr. James McLucas’ powerful and prophetic defense of the rational for the celibate priesthood and description of how we got into the current situation in his article “The Emasculation of the Priesthood” http://www.latinmassmagazine.com/articles/articles_emasculation.html, and ask Professor Carlin for his comments on it, as it seems he is unfamiliar with any of the material and arguments in it. Doing this would be a fitting response to the “spur” of conversation that Mr. Royal has called for regarding this subject, as well as allow The Catholic Thing to maintain many in its readership who are clearly beginning to connect the dots and realize how the situation in the Church has actually gotten as bad as it is today. These readers doubt if not reject the official version of events recounted by those with little appreciation for the traditions of the Church. As evidence for the unofficial version of events continues to mount and become increasingly clear, they increasingly have little patience with those who either ignore the evidence or who are blind to it.
