I find myself in the uncomfortable position of disagreeing with a number of fellow Catholics on this issue. Why are skeptics focusing on a body count, when the issue is also ventilator need for victims as well as the number hospitalized, not to mention the reported slow recovery time?
I can’t understand this. During this time when it seems the government is acting out of a sense of caution for lives, we accuse the government of draconian measures surely intended to take away our civil liberties. That may be how it ends up, right now the emphasis needs to be on preventing the spread of this virus.
It is not “merely” deaths. It is ventilator requirement, when we know there are not enough. Just as it is likely the case that few could witness an actual abortion and support it thereafter, the reality of observing someone die of respiratory failure without assistance would be beyond sobering, more like horrifying. And to love that individual and not be able to help. This is the stuff of nightmares.
Please, read the AP News story just out “Italy’s Virus Epicenter Grapples with Huge Toll”, to hear about life in the epicenter. That is reality. Why on God’s earth would we not do all we can to avoid that. We shouldn’t be minimizing this virus or casting doubt right now on directives. As one of the Chinese residents in Italy said a few weeks ago, the Chinese people know how bad these plagues can be. They take precautions in order to live first, then worry about other things afterward. Maybe we could learn a lesson from that.

4,000 deaths in a nation of 60,500,000 is a rate of 1/15,000 (.0067%). That is not overwhelming the system. Italy normally has 17,000 deaths per flu season (13 weeks). Corona is *less*. All of China is suffering a .00071% fatality rate.
And then, beside that, look at the cost of our response – turning this into a false pandemic. We are literally burning our economy (way of life) to the ground. It may never come back. Many, many, many will never get their jobs back; savings; retirement; homes. Everything we have know is paused; perhaps permanently stopped. People are suffering and will suffer much, much more. And from this, social and political unrest, possible conflict.
The Mass. They have taken the Mass away. Everywhere. The Mass and Sacraments gone.
Pretty steep cost, imo. For a virus with a fatality rate far, far less than a normal flu (250 flu deaths/day in U.S; 250 total Corona).
