According to Bergoglio, ”The guards, the soldiers, who were at the sepulcher … saw him alive and risen…and then they pretended not to have seen him.. It was money that changed reality. They had seen the wonder of the resurrection, but were paid to keep quiet… paid to forget him.”
The watchmen at Jesus’ tomb were Roman soldiers, placed there by Pilate, the Roman governor and pro-consul (surrogate of Emperor Tiberius). It is quite probable that among them were mingled some Temple guards sent by chief priest and spy, Caiaphas, fearing disciples might steal the body and claim Jesus had risen. What St. Matthew tells us is that the guards witnessed the arrival of the angel who rolled the tomb stone away. The Roman seal (i.e. validated closure by the authority of Rome) was broken. Overwhelmed by terror, all the guards became like “dead men.” Afterward, “some guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. When the priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, ‘You are to say [publicly] “His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ ” Caiaphas promised to defend them when the news reached Pilate.
Bergoglio’s rewrite of St Matthew shows hubris and Marxism: hubris, because he deliberately asserts as fact that which is fiction (nothing in the Gospel says that the guards saw Christ Himself rise from the dead. Or indeed, how could they have seen Him or witnessed a robbery of Christ’s body if they were “asleep”? and Marxism, because history is seen as nothing other than a series of progressive revolutions, an evolving lust for possessions, an evolving process of crises where people survive by having to sell themselves like any other commodity.
Not only did the guards not see the Resurrection itself, but the bribed “pretenders” were not Romans. Why on earth would they report to the Jewish priests and elders, let alone make backroom deals with locals under Roman occupation? We know that from the heyday of the Roman Republic until the early Empire (time of Christ), a Roman legionary’s life was synonymous with Officium, Fidelitas, and Amor Patriae (duty, allegiance, and patriotism); the army believed in divine right of their rulers and commanders. Victory in battle and loyal service earned them elitist honors and wealth. Cowardice or treason meant execution, exile, or slavery unto death in the mines or galley ships. A “Roman Guard” was a 16-man unit. On duty or “vigil,” the men could not be seated or lean on anything. If one fell asleep, he and his entire unit would be beaten and burned to death. Such men would never tell the people of Jerusalem that they had fallen asleep! No amount of gold or blather by Caiaphas could have prevented their immediate execution by Pilate.
