The slight to families of the abused follows the bewildering remark from Archbishop of Havana Jaime Ortega that Cuba no longer has prisoners of conscience.<\/p>\n<p>Eight members of the Ladies in White activist group have attended Sunday Catholic Mass wearing white for years, sitting in the pews in silence unless participating in the Mass. No reports have surfaced of the women themselves\u2013mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters of prisoners of conscience\u2013disturbing the Mass. Nonetheless, a priest in Cienfuegos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.damasdeblanco.org\/index.php\/noticias\/2057-expulsadas-ocho-damas-de-blanco-de-la-parroquia-de-aguada-de-pasajeros-cienfuegos\">expelled them from his service<\/a>, ordering them never to wear white again in his church if they wish to attend services.<\/p>\n<p>The priest, identified as \u201cFather Tarciso,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diariodecuba.com\/derechos-humanos\/1434986473_15286.html\">told\u00a0<em>Diario de Cuba<\/em><\/a> that the women were \u201cdisrespectful,\u201d stating, \u201cI had told them that the way things are could not continue to be. \u2026 I cannot allow our community to be further fractured,\u201d he argued. He accused them of taking photographs inside the church, which the ladies deny.\u00a0Miladis Espino D\u00edaz, a representative of the Ladies in White, noted that they were expelled from the church and, upon walking out, could hear the priest apologize to those in attendance for not having done it sooner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not only go to church because we are Ladies in White,\u201d Espino D\u00edaz told the newspaper, \u201cbut because we believe in God. We sing, we pray, we participate, we do nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following their removal from the church, the women testified to being the victim of a number of offensive acts, including a man \u201cexposing himself and urinating in front of them,\u201d \u201cobscene gestures using fingers,\u201d and \u201cbeing called prostitutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Offenses to the Ladies in White are common as they attempt to attend Mass; in a particularly gruesome instance last year, one woman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2015\/02\/23\/cuban-dissident-tarred-as-government-arrests-200-for-attending-catholic-mass\/\">was tarred<\/a> for wearing white to the service.<\/p>\n<p>Two male supporters of the group, Emilio Garc\u00eda Moreira and\u00a0Alexander Veliz Garc\u00eda, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diariodecuba.com\/derechos-humanos\/1435349507_15376.html\">began a hunger strike Thursday<\/a> to support the return of the women to Mass.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic religion is heavily regulated in communist Cuba, where it is technically a counterrevolutionary activity but has managed to persist, particularly given overtures by Pope Francis towards the Castro dictatorship. \u201cIf he keeps talking like this, I\u2019ll return to the Church,\u201d Ra\u00fal Castro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/1791609-raul-castro-en-el-vaticano-el-papa-esta-haciendo-que-vuelva-a-ser-catolico\">said of the Pope<\/a> this year following his support of major U.S. concessions to the Castro regime.
