{"id":437,"date":"2015-03-11T20:44:45","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T20:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/66.147.242.160\/~stumbli4\/?p=437"},"modified":"2015-03-11T20:47:36","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T20:47:36","slug":"merciful-cardinal-tagle-and-the-new-springtime-of-self-esteem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stumblingblock.org\/?p=437","title":{"rendered":"Merciful Cardinal Tagle And The New Springtime Of Self-Esteem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.147.242.160\/~stumbli4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tagle-and-francis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-444 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.147.242.160\/~stumbli4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tagle-and-francis.jpg?resize=554%2C351\" alt=\"tagle and francis\" width=\"554\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stumblingblock.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tagle-and-francis.jpg?w=970&amp;ssl=1 970w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/stumblingblock.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tagle-and-francis.jpg?resize=300%2C190&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In America recently, and now speaking from London, &#8220;Philippine Francis&#8221; Cardinal Luis Tagle is traveling the world and making a name for himself.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/religion\/11457842\/Cardinal-Churchs-severe-stance-towards-gay-or-divorced-Catholics-left-people-branded.html\" target=\"_blank\">London Telegraph reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"firstPar\">\n<blockquote><p>The \u201charsh\u201d and \u201csevere\u201d stance adopted by the Catholic clerics towards gay people, divorcees and single mothers has done lasting harm, one of the most prominent members of the Church\u2019s new generation of Cardinals has acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila in the Philippines, said the Church had to learn lessons from changing social attitudes and a greater understanding of psychology and recognise the \u201cwounds\u201d its judgmental approach had caused in the past.<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking after addressing thousands of young British Catholics at the \u201cFlame II\u201d rally in Wembley Arena in London where he gave an impassioned call for Christians to learn again the meaning of the word \u201cmercy\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Do sinners wound the Church or does the Church wound sinners?\u00a0 Why is Cardinal Tagle making an apology tour?<\/p>\n<div class=\"fourthPar\">\n<blockquote><p>The 57-year-old cleric who is widely considered to be a possible future Pope, was given an ecstatic reception from the crowd as he told them that \u201conly mercy can save humanity\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Does that mean anything?\u00a0\u00a0 Did they stand up for that?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fifthPar\">\n<blockquote><p>Speaking afterwards, he said it was clear that the tone taken towards gay people, divorcees who remarried against Catholic teaching and unmarried mothers had left many feeling \u201cbranded\u201d and socially ostracised.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been harsh, we&#8217;ve wounded, we&#8217;ve had a tone, we&#8217;ve branded, we&#8217;ve burned. We even made a social sin. We&#8217;ve been an awful bad Church all these years, especially if you have a gay sex habit or a second husband.\u00a0 We were extra mean to you!<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s that psychological damage just uncovered through research.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He added that improved understanding of child psychology had exposed the scale of harm done to children by the disciplinarian stance taken in schools.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cmercy\u201d has been the central theme of Pope Francis\u2019s pontificate but has exposed sharp divisions over possible moves to relax the ban on remarried divorcees receiving communion.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Tagle told The Telegraph: \u201cWe have to admit that this whole spirituality, this growth in mercy and the implementation of the virtue of mercy is something that we need to learn over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the past approach in Catholic schools and other institutions had often been to dictate rules and tell people that they were \u201cfor your own good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow with our growing sensibilities, growth in psychology, we realise that some of them were not as merciful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow with the growth of insights in child psychology we see some of the wounds inflicted with that \u2013 and so we learn.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Withholding Holy Communion is causing irreparable mental damage.
