He held hands with the other worshipers during the Lord\u2019s Prayer, sang along to \u201cI Am the Bread of Life\u201d and knelt after receiving communion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"880\">\u201cIt gives me a serenity, and allows me to think clearer,\u201d Mr. Bush said as he exited the tile-roof church here on a recent Sunday, exchanging greetings and, with the ease of a longtime politician, acquiescing to the occasional photo. \u201cIt\u2019s made me a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"880\">Does this sound Catholic to you yet, or is this Zen?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"515\" data-total-count=\"1395\">Twenty years after Mr. Bush converted to Catholicism, the religion of his wife, following a difficult and unsuccessful political campaign that had put a strain on his marriage, his faith has become a central element of the way he shapes his life and frames his views on public policy. And now, as he explores a bid for the presidency, his religion has become a focal point of early appeals to evangelical activists, who are particularly important in a Republican primary that is often dominated by religious voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"420\" data-total-count=\"2343\">Many of his priorities during his two terms as governor of Florida aligned with those of the Catholic Church \u2014 including his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/stateroundup\/the-audacity-of-jeb-bush-a-governor-goes-all-in-on-the-terri-schiavo-case\/2213997\">extraordinary, and unsuccessful, effort<\/a> to force a hospital to keep Terri Schiavo on life support, as well as less well-known, and also unsuccessful, efforts to appoint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/05\/15\/us\/gov-jeb-bush-to-seek-guardian-for-fetus-of-rape-victim.html?smid=pl-share\">a guardian for the fetus<\/a> of a developmentally disabled rape victim and to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/05\/04\/national\/04pregnancy.html\"> prevent a 13-year-old girl<\/a> from having an abortion. He even, during his first year in office in 1999, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/1999-06-09\/news\/9906080935_1_choose-life-life-tag-life-license\">signed a law creating a \u201cChoose Life\u201d license plate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"420\" data-total-count=\"2343\">He differed from his church, significantly and openly, over capital punishment; the state executed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/blogs\/the-buzz-florida-politics\/with-13-executions-under-his-watch-rick-scott-is-floridas-record-holding\/2165403\"> 21 prisoners<\/a> on his watch, the most under any Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. But he has won praise from Catholic officials for his welcoming tone toward immigrants and his relatively centrist positions on education \u2014 two issues in which he is at odds with the right wing of his party.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"420\" data-total-count=\"2343\">Now I&#8217;m confused.\u00a0 Is he Catholic or is he Republican or is he a Conservative or is he a Democrat?\u00a0 At least he made the bishops&#8217; happy most of the time?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"420\" data-total-count=\"2343\">\u00a0\u201cAs a public leader, one\u2019s faith should guide you,\u201d Mr. Bush said in Italy in 2009, explaining his attitude about the relationship between religion and politics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetingrimini.org\/eng\/default.asp?id=846&amp;item=4856#document\">at a conference<\/a> associated with Communion and Liberation, a conservative Catholic lay movement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"420\" data-total-count=\"2343\">For a &#8216;conservative&#8217; Catholic movement, Pope Francis sure seems to honor Communion and Liberation&#8217;s leading lights, especially those that help them &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruxnow.com\/church\/2015\/03\/07\/pope-were-not-in-the-business-of-eternal-condemnation\/\" target=\"_blank\">rediscover a no-moralizing way of being Christians<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"301\" data-total-count=\"2906\">\u201cIn the United States, many people think you need to keep your faith, put it in a security box, if you\u2019re an elected official \u2014 put it in a safety deposit box until you finish your service as a public servant and then you can go get it back,\u201d he added. \u201cI never felt that was appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"441\" data-total-count=\"5491\">For a man who likes to wear his faith on his sleeve, so to speak, he sure seems to agree with the Catholic Bishops a lot on politics.\u00a0 What&#8217;s so Catholic about that?\u00a0 What&#8217;s conservative about it?\u00a0 What&#8217;s even Republican about it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"441\" data-total-count=\"5491\">Don&#8217;t worry though.\u00a0 At least he might seem a bit more Catholic than Pope Francis.\u00a0 He knows when to go to Holy Communion.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"441\" data-total-count=\"5491\">D. Michael McCarron, who at the time was the executive director of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops, recalled seeing Mr. Bush with his wife during a Mass in Tallahassee in the late 1980s, when Mr. Bush was Florida\u2019s secretary of commerce. \u201cAt the time he was not a Catholic, and I was struck by the fact that he would not take communion, which is appropriate, and I just observed him kneeling and praying,\u201d Mr. McCarron said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"441\" data-total-count=\"5491\">Look at that!\u00a0 He still became Catholic anyway after being unmercifully rejected and denied by <a href=\"http:\/\/vaticaninsider.lastampa.it\/en\/the-vatican\/detail\/articolo\/santa-marta-39794\/\" target=\"_blank\">lawmakers who destroy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"477\" data-total-count=\"7685\">\u201cI love the sacraments of the Catholic Church, the timeless nature of the message of the Catholic Church, the fact that the Catholic Church believes in, and acts on, absolute truth as its foundational principle and doesn\u2019t move with the tides of modern times, as my former religion did,\u201d he said in the speech in Italy in 2009. (Asked by email recently what his concerns were, he said only: \u201cI loved the absolute nature of the Catholic Church. It resonated with me.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"10458\">That was then.\u00a0 This is now.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a whole new Catholic world apparently.\u00a0 Will Jeb stick or move?<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"10458\">As Florida Governor Bush heard from the bishops occasionally, but they had much in common.\u00a0 He even crossed notorious St. Petersburg Bishop Robert Lynch, if only just a bit.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"story-continues-9\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"389\" data-total-count=\"10104\">\u201cI appreciate the Catholic Conference\u2019s sincere commitment to advancing public policy that complies with the teachings of our Lord,\u201d the governor wrote in an email to Bishop Robert N. Lynch of St. Petersburg. \u201cI hope you know that I try to do the same. When we seldom disagree, it makes me very, very uncomfortable. Having said that, I will continue to do what I think is right.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"10458\">For the most part however, Jeb Bush seems to be a presidential candidate the U.S. Bishops can stand behind.\u00a0 For that matter, perhaps so can the Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"10458\">I&#8217;d watch my back, Mr. Bush.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"354\" data-total-count=\"10458\">Those disputes notwithstanding, Mr. Bush has received praise from Catholic leaders. Last year, he visited New York to help raise money for Catholic schools, attended Mass at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral and won plaudits from Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, who interviewed Mr. Bush on his radio program and then talked about him <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/face-the-nation-transcripts-april-20-2014\/2\/\">on \u201cFace the Nation\u201d on CBS<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"10618\">\u201cI like Jeb Bush a lot,\u201d Cardinal Dolan said in the television appearance. \u201cI especially appreciate the priority he gives to education and immigration.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"10618\">There&#8217;s a ringing endorsement!<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"10618\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is the New York Times so interested in Jeb Bush&#8217;s Catholicism?\u00a0 It&#8217;s creepy.
