As usual, the “official” death reports coming out and coinciding in all the media should be taken with many grains of salt. For one thing, as any reader of detective stories or watcher of detective films and television series knows, nothing is IMMEDIATELY ruled out as an “accident.”

Chris Stefanik, President of RealLifeCatholic.com, is a Catholic version of the Mega-Church pastor. Just the right amount of face stubble. Just the right amount of fade in the jeans. Hip T-shirts. Miked up for the stage walk-about. As a former Proddie who began investigating the timeless truths of the Catholic Church, largely because I grew tired of the neverending “relevance” movement and drive to be hip with the cutting edge youth, I recognize MegaChurch Pastor.
What says he? Not terrible, quite frankly. But this tweet, like so many others of his, destroys any credibility he might have had. He doesn’t understand the first thing about being truly Catholic – best represented in this tweet:

Actually, Chris, you fail to understand the essential point of the Faith, and what happens when we approach God and His Angels in Mass. The TLM is not “chant”, as you out it. The TLM is a liturgical rubric, carefully sourced in antiquity by Pope St. Pius V, as a subset of the Dogmatic Council of Trent. He dogmatically guaranteed it for all time via his Papap Bull Quo Primus, and carefully laid out why and how it was sourced in All Truth.
Why is this important, Chris Stefanik? Because, unlike Protestant MegaChurch services and unlike NuChurch Masses which strive to create the MegaChurch vibe, the TLM is the unbloody re-presentation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where we Catholics are present at Calvary with Mary and John and all Catholics in time. We worship Jesus there. God descends from His Throne and deigns to become Bread, present with us on the Holy Altar, in communion with our body and soul. NuMass commemorates Jesus in a memorial meal , very much like Protestants do. It does not propose that it is the Holy Sacrifice, however. How do we know? Because they turn their back on Jesus. Because they do not kneel in his presence. They take bread from unconsecrated male and female, adult and child, hands and walk back to their chair with it. NuMass is by design and act more Protestant than Catholic.
Chant? Where is the chant, to which you refer, Chris? People like you who don’t get it refer to externals they call the “smells and bells”. There is no chant. The words are sometimes said (Low Mass), or sung (High Mass). But the words are rubrics, ancient outside of time and unite one generation of Catholics to all others forever. Unity … perfect unity, because God created it (the Mass) for us to worship Him.
MegaChurches … they come and they go. They seem so vibrant and important for a time … and then, they disappear, both them and their, oh so hip Pastors. Replaced by something else more current and vivid.
Catholic Church endures unchanged, boring only if you don’t understand it, and will remain unchanged forever, especially after it is raised into heaven in the Eschaton.

Oh, yeah. Mega Church, all the way. That is the way of NuChurch. That is where they (the Apostles) are taking us. They have given us over and converted to Protestantism and all its essential ways. So much joy at their rock concert churches. So much sadness and silence at TLM Churches. Attraction of the peoples depends on music and lights and Almighty Relevance.
As with all MegaChurch pastors, the message might include Jesus Christ, but in essence it is about the Pastor first, the people second, and Jesus Christ – if He is mentioned at all – has the role of supporting cast, in support of “living your best life, now”. The message is Trendy Man, striding the stage, sound, music, lights, acoustics, band all so very hip and cool. Jesus is there, somewhere, but the takeaway, when all is said and done … “Chris Stefanick. Chris.Ste.Fan.ick. He rocks”!
