There are actually several possible justifications for the use of nuclear weapons, but their use does have to respect the principle of double effect. So any foreseen evil consequence of their use (e.g., loss of innocent civilian life) would have to be unavoidable and unintended; it would also need to be proportionate to the good that’s intended.
A sample scenario given by the late Austin Fagothey, S.J., is when an enemy’s civilians have become militarized, as when they’ve begun developing weapons for the military. In this case, Fagothey points out that the civilians’ homes have effectively become “manufacturing plant[s] of war material.” So he concludes (I think rightly) that “the entire city would become a legitimate military target” and, as a result, could justify the kind of widespread destruction involved in using a nuclear weapon.
Frank, I’m constantly dismayed by you “Americanists” portraying Capitalism as the antithesis of Communism. It would be much fairer to say that Communism is the apex of Capitalism where the plutocracy “owns” the State and everything and everyone in it.
Nowhere from Thomas Aquinas (who seems to me to have indulged in uncharacteristic intellectual gymnastics to “justify” the then current practice) to Leo XIII is Capitalism ever endorsed as a Christian principle of economic order. In fact, I would contend that the “Americanist” version of Capitalism is State sanctioned theft by usury… one of the most grievous sins “crying to Heaven for vengeance”.
This comment box is obviously not the place to discuss usury but I protest against the insinuation that Capitalism is “Christian” just because it is fashionably proposed as the antithesis of “Socialism” or “Communism”.
