The spider story, spun into Christmas fare for the children, has been told before.
Some believe it to be based on an episode in the life of St. Felix who lived near Naples during the 3rd century persecutions of Roman Emperor Decius.
According to the “Golden Legend,” “Whenever Felix was led before an idol to force him to sacrifice to it, he blew on it and it fell to pieces.” The hands of the pagan guards who came to seize Felix having suddenly been paralyzed, Felix responded: “Say ‘Christ is God’ and the pain will leave you.” And so it happened.
St. Felix could also sneak by undetected because of a few “spider friends.”
One day when he was preaching and a death squad was after him, he hid in a niche of a ruined house. By God’s command, spiders spun thick filaments across the opening. So, the persecutors, seeing the cobwebs, went on their way.
It’s high time we said a prayer to St. Felix, aka patron of spiders, who knows a thing or two about dire straits and God’s timely miracles.

This Bergoglians sentiment reminds me of the book Tootle, in which Tootle the train got bored riding the tracks all the time, never getting to smell the flowers and visit all the fun places he rode by on the stupid, boring tracks. Freedom! is what Tootle wanted. Tootle didn’t like being constrained by the stupid, boring, local tracks, He wants more than the local tracks could offer. But he must learn to stay on the tracks no matter what—if he ever hopes to achieve his dream of being a Flyer between New York and Chicago! He gives in and jumps the tracks for short term satisfaction, but soon learns his lesson, all alone in the fields disconnected from the tracks that give him direction, speed and power. He was truly lost, until he returned to the boring old track and huffed and puffed and rolled along as his Engineer directed.

True freedom is to die to the world. True freedom is to take up our Cross. True freedom is to chain ourselves and suffer with our Crucified Lord. True freedom is to stay within the boundaries of the Deposit of Faith because it is Divine and a taste of Heaven from which it comes. True freedom is to “stay on the tracks”. Those who are not Catholic can never understands.
