4 Thoughts on “Canon212 Update: Someone Tell The Times That The FrancisMass Isn’t ‘Trendy’

  1. Thanks, Frank, for posting Mondabor’s slam at the increasingly conglomerated “irreverence” of the Novus Ordo Mass. It’s so ineffably sad, though, that most of the attendees appear to have no idea. or care, about his point. But just to set the record straight:

“Reverence” comes from the Latin verb ” revereor -reveri -reveritus sum” which means to stand in awe (of), to honor in deference, admiration, veneration.
Awe is a feeling of fear that is mixed with respect and wonder. For example, we should gaze at the Tabernacle with a great feeling of wonder at God’s sublime presence and transcendent goodness, yet with a “holy fear” (reverence and humility because of His divinity and absolute authority).

The experience has been shown comparable to both love and joy. Psychologists and researchers note that awe increases our “existential awareness,” diminishes self-satisfied materialism, thereby motivating us to greater spirituality and care for the good [blessing] of others.

It’ s always good to meditate on “reverence,” but especially on this, the last day of the Liturgical calendar year. It helps to keep in mind the thief on the cross next to Our Lord (Luke 23): Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

  2. Hi Frank,

As a person who grew up with an abusive father and also had an abusive husband, I think for a woman to have an option to have a job so she can get away from the abuse is a good thing. I’m speaking as a Catholic who also believes that it’s a good thing to have the means to escape from a dangerous situation.

  3. One thing I wanted to add is that in 1975, when my mother tried to leave my abusive father, she had no credit history because she had never paid bills in her own name. She had difficulty renting an apartment or getting a loan. At least in our case, financial constraints kept my mom and four kids in an abusive situation for 10 years longer than we wanted. No money is a major reason why many women 50 years ago did not leave their abusive husbands.

I’m not warning against women learning trades or for staying with dangerous spouses. I only think that the world, including perhaps groups like these nuns, encourage family destruction by searching for ‘abuse’ and ‘too much machismo’ in husbands. I’m confident that the extremely high, civilization-wrecking divorce rate is more a factor of incentivized wives than cruel husbands.

Husbands and wives have always been sinners. If the situation is worse today, then it probably is for both sexes. Insofar as the ‘sin’ of divorce goes though, that one seems more particular to women, who make about 4 out of 5 filings, from what I read.

In a family with a mean dad and a nice mom, I wonder how much of a difference it used to make over time, to have 8 children who can grow to be natural allies for mom, and a kind of corrective balance for dad. That rarely happens today.
