Popes protected by God. That is the argument. The popes answer only to the Head, Christ, and Sacred Tradition. Then how did we get the destroyers, Bernadine, McCarrick, and Bergoglio….that may work if you have a faithful pope but what happens when you have a faithless pope (and there have been a number of them), or not so faithful pope, then the Divine Protection and obedience ordinance becomes a formula for tyranny. Augustine in his sermons on the psalms writes that the visible Church consists in those that believe in the Lord Jesus, have a genuine hope of salvation, and the fire of Divine charity….he never mentions belief in the pope, in his hundreds of pages of commentary, as being of the essence of salvation. Of course the great Doctor of the Western Church wrote 1500 years ago, at a time when it could be presumed that popes were quite connected to the Faith and would give their lives for it. Taking a look at our times maybe some learned man ought to write An Essay on the Deconstruction of Christian Doctrine.

Oh, you’re right. It does! But I’m not sure if one can definitely call him an anti-pope just yet. I think he should be removed as a heretic. But all the arguments against him ever actually being pope in the first place are compelling too.
That’s what irked me about irksome New Catholic. Somebody probably told him that I think Benedict is definitely pope or something. And he was happy to spread that lie without even finding out.
Just curious: Is there something in particular about the BiP arguments that you find too problematic or weak to completely swing BiP? (I hope I’m not overlooking something myself.)
I would not be surprised to find that BXVI did something to canonically nullify his abdication, because I would not be surprised to find that he was pressed. It’s also just as likely that the conclave was invalid for a number of reasons. I’ve always felt the fact that Francis was a heretic made his papacy very doubtful. But I was pretty sure the next pope would be a Francis when BXVI stepped down. I guess I’m waiting for an official ruling, or a Catholic pope, whichever comes first.
