Yes indeed, the Vatican’s Nativity set is from about 50-60 years ago. Like you, some have already bravely decried the kitschy desecrations of Nativity scenes in Italy this December (i.e. masks on the statues, plastic nurses near the manger, toilet paper décor,…), but I think the cultic statue display unveiled today in St.Peter’s Square eclipses them all. The Pachamama now has company, very bad company.

As a professor of the Ancient World and art historian, I was terribly surprised to see the cylindrical clay-based figures so clearly reminiscent of those once placed in pagan Sumerian temples, Phoenician votive shrines, and elsewhere in the pre-Christian Middle East. Perhaps this desacralization should have been expected. After all, last year’s was a sand sculpture! Hard not to tip the hat to horror story sage, Stephen King, famously saying that “life is such a wheel…and it always, at the end, comes round to the same place again… Crimes committed long ago by sinners long dead makes no difference. Demonic spirits are always alive and awake, and so tragedies repeat and repeat.”

The statues of Mary, Joseph, the Angel, and Jesus (also wise men to be added) are in the “minimalist” Mesopotamian style, their unblessed bodies reduced to barrel rings or stacked drums. Typical also are the deadpan faces with stony goggle-eyes staring stunned and stupefied out into space. Just what we want for Christmas!! But wait. It gets worse.

The centerpiece is not the Holy Babe, but a bewildering Brobdingnagian angel propped up with bulky axe-like wings. She absolutely dwarfs Mary and Joseph who are made to look like lowly, clueless Ushabti figurines. She herself, the only one with a halo, seems to be a clone of Hathor at Abu Simbel, the winged and solar-crowned Egyptian “mother goddess.”

Of course, the “mother goddess” had different names in different places (plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose). The principal icon of Bronze Age Crete was a tubular diva of life and death, whose wings took the form of a double axe. Her counterpart in Sumeria and Babylon was worshipped as the formidable Ishtar, consort of Baal, lord of heaven and earth, and fed by human sacrifice. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Ishtar played the role of the vengeful Angel of Death who “will tear down the gates of hell to let the dead roam the Earth to devour the living.” In Phoenicia and in northern Israel, this same goddess was known at shrines and on altars as Asherah: “On hills they built for themselves profane pillars, and there perverted many persons in the land… Ahab made an Asherah Pole and did more to provoke the Lord to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him” [Book of Kings 14-16].

In Asia Minor, Gaia was the original Earth mother goddess ( still referenced and reverenced today by eco-theologians and New Agers, Bergoglio included of course. Gaia morphed into the Greek Artemis, sister of the sun god Apollo. Her sanctuary at Ephesus was one of the seven Wonders of the World. There is a direct and curious correspondence between Artemis and the “Vatican angel.” If you look closely at both “wings,” however cloddishly columnar and chopped in half, there are sculpted clusters of egg-shaped amulet pockets. Pagan charms and spells were exactly the statue’s trademark at the Artemision.

FYI, the Vatican Nativity set was a gift from the Italian Art Institute, F.A.Grue, well acknowledged by Mr. Mattarella, President of Italy and friend of Bergoglio. The actual statues were made in the mid-1960’s and early 1970’s, i.e. the immediate post- Vatican II era when the Art Institute, like the Church, sought renewal by “expanding and diversifying,” by “adapting to the changing…needs and trends.”
