The original Hagia Sophia, Church of the Holy Wisdom, was built in 4th century Constantinople over the cult site of the Serapis, Eastern god of Wisdom, lord of Time. Two centuries later, having been badly damaged by fire, it was rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian as “the largest Christian building in the world.” Its 200-foot high dome, called the“vault of heaven,” was encircled with forty windows and covered with four acres of 22-karat hammered gold. The choirs stall were made of sterling silver, the altar of solid gold. It was called “Little Holy Land” because of the hundreds of sacred relics on display there (e.g. the Holy Shroud, the iron nails, lance, sponge, crown of thorns, the True Cross, relics from the Nativity…).
In the 11th century, Hagia Sophia was where the Patriarch of Constantinople officially excommunicated the Pope of Rome. It then became the center of Byzantine Greek Orthodoxy, officially in schism with Roman Catholicism… until Sultan Mehmed II in the 15th century conquered the city and declared Hagia Sophia and all Christian churches to be mosques. Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia became the headquarters of the Islamic Ottoman Sultanate until 1922, when Kamal Ataturk was declared 1st president of the Republic of Turkey. He called the former capital Istanbul. Hagia Sophia became a museum and a Unesco Heritage site… until last year when nationalist President Erdogan ordered Turkish authorities to re-open Hagia Sophia as a mosque.
Bergoglio, on the other hand, is no religious zealot (Mehmet II, Erdogan) and no secularist, populist, republicanist (Ataturk). He is, by all accounts, a mercenary, a marketeer, a broker. Years ago, he started renting out the Sistine Chapel and other such venues for business and social purposes; he’s “redistributed” certain relics from St.Mary Major and other churches; he famously peddled his own position to the Chinese. Given this pattern, he’s certain not to turn St.Peter’s into a museum: there’s no money in that; there are next to no paying tourists going there anyway these days. I think instead he will sell off statues and reliquaries, precious ornaments and paintings, to “help the poor” and “his brothers” (rich collectors and clerics worldwide).
