There is a certain kind of Catholic (Kennedy Hall – never heard of him – is the latest) who takes supreme pride in their cigar and pipe smoking personas. And usually it’s pictured with gangster glasses or reduced gangster lighting to heighten the killer-dude effect. And no one really does such things … except certain strains of Trad. Strange people.
Toronto Catholic Witness blog relates an FSSP Priest who blames the Faithful for causing the conflict that has put their special (*and very, very limited and precisely controlled*) permission to celebrate the Mass in the “Extraordinary Form”, otherwise known to every other Catholic throughout the ages as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, unified by Papal Bull according to Pope St. Pius V.
If the FSSP were theologically honest they would celebrate the New Order Mass, side by side with the TLM. In fact I’ll take it one step further. If they were honest, the FSSP would stop celebrating the TLM altogether. “Pope” Francis has made his will known, the Mass of the Church is the New Mass. Why is the FSSP still celebrating the old when the “Pope” has decreed the New™️?
Father xxx, whoever said such a thing to the Faithful (and I have no doubt he speaks for every other FSSP Priest) please explain why you resist the “Pope’s” clear will for the Faithful and bring division to the Mass with the old when the Pope is trying to bring unity around the new?
I say this rhetorically, ironically, sarcastically, because the answer is obvious. FSSP want all the benefits of permission but don’t wish to do any of the hard lifting of taking a side in the conflict in defense of what they PROFESS they hold most dear. Has ANY FSSP EVER celebrated the New™️ Mass? If not, why not? Act as you say you believe. The “Pope” wants the New™️; he wants you to turn around; he wants female lectors and alter servers; he wants communion standing and in the hand dispensed by male and female EMs. Why not FSSP Priest? Turn around, if you really believe what you say. Otherwise, join the fight in defense of Sacred Magisterial Tradition against those who are trying, quite successfully so far absent opposition, to take it all.
And, having said what I said, I fully acknowledge the FSSP has protected the TLM and made it accessible over the past 33 years. That’s good. But under the condition that they accept every word and punctuation mark of the pastoral, non-dogmatic Vatican II Council as fully binding within the Catholic Church, including its New™️ Mass liturgy. That’s bad. And they very strongly insist on it, as demonstrated in the Toronto Catholic article.
And so, why I say what I say is derived from that principle. If they insist that this is true, and they do, I know from experience, then they must practice what they preach to the fullest extent and not hide behind practical equivocations.
If they defend the New™️ Mass … SAY the New™️ Mass in all of its worldly, humanistic glory.
Or – change your belief about these things.
