Recognize and Resist – that is the argument.
What is his premise?
1: We recognize that Francis is the legitimate pope.
2: As pope he is our Holy Father who deserves our obedience.
3: We resist all aspects of his work that are contrary to apostolic tradition.
*: side note: he missed a crucial step in logic – step 2a: “He deserves our obedience as Jesus Christ’s Vicar, guardian and deliverer of the Sacred Deposit of Faith”. This is the essence of the OFFICE of Pope, which is what we reverence – the man who is Pope transcends his human person to represent something truly divine – the Office endowed by Our Lord.
Be that as it may – Eric Sammon falls off the rails with step 1 of his logical progression: Recognize.
As he puts it – “Let’s first be clear about our terms. The first R, “Recognize,” is simple: … Jorge Bergoglio is the current and valid Roman Pontiff, reigning as Pope Francis, and as such has legitimate authority over the Church, most especially as defined at Vatican I.
No. Full stop, no.
The first step is to recognize the true and reigning Pope. Apply steps 2-4 to help determine who this man is before proceeding to judge this man’s reigning acts within the Office (Munus) of Pope. Don’t forget to apply the lessons of “Resist” to the base premise of step 1: WHO IS the legitimate Pope?
And so I would ask, Eric Sammons, he of the Recognize and Resist model – “what do you do with the man who failed to resign the Office (Munus) as required by governing Canon Law 332.2 (“§2. If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office …”) and who remains as Pope with a suffix (Emeritus) never seen at any time in Catholic history (history of the world) and who remains, as ever, Pope? You are ignoring him, residing in his Papal contemplative state, he who continues to bestow Apostolic blessings upon dignitaries and Cardinals. You are not recognizing, nor are you resisting at the base premise of all that you subsequently profess. Your base premise is wrong because you missed that important step.
Jorge Bergoglio is NOT “current and valid Roman Pontiff, reigning as Pope Francis”, nor is he have, therefor, “legitimate authority over the Church”.
And the problem with your fatal miss is that you are left with a Recognize and Resist in which EVERYTHING, literally EVERYTHING, must be resisted – including the most recent of ongoing outrages – the Vatican Christmas Crèche that elevates Pachamama for worship and veneration.
Almost everyone ignored the simple little word – Munus – and relegated it to a simple little mistake (no big deal) and ignored the strange unprecedented actions that were the seismic departure from the Sacred Deposit of Faith which leaves Holy Mother Church with two visible Popes – one false Pope governing as Bishop of Rome and the legitimate Pope hidden in his Munus,deep within the Vatican.

What is it that restrains the Lawless One, spoken of in primordial Christian times, in St. Paul’s Second letter to the Thessalonians?
“And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of His mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness”.—2 Thess 2:6-12
It appears to me, in my reading of the Biblical text, in reference to Fr. Nix’s article, that he who restrains the Lawless One is the Rock, Peter, The Divine Office of Pope, the collective of Popes who ever lived in time until the Eschaton, all the Holy Fathers who ever lived – protected and guided by the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, Holy Spirit.
Which is why it is no small thing – it is EVERYTHING, in fact – to know who is legitimate Pope. Every member of Holy RCC is due this in full faith and confidence and it must be shown clearly who, how and wherefore. Upon this, everything hangs – not just in the Church but upon earth itself.
So … what happens when he who restrains is removed from the earth? What happens when Sede IS (in point of fact) Vacante?
Anyone who does not see Jorge Bergoglio and his many hideous acts as antipope by now … I don’t know what else to say. It is logically clear, according to facts. It is spiritually clear, according to acts. It is as clear as crystal this man is outside the line of Popes in every measurable way.
For those who see this for what it is, we also see our suffering Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, hidden, alone, suffering and … according to the above Biblical Text the SOLE restraining force against the coming of antichrist – Lawless One.
Is it not a miracle … a divine miracle … that Joseph Ratzinger lives as long as he has? No other Pope in history has lived this long. He is sustained in life, miraculously, as far as I’m concerned.
And when he dies – the Seat will be Vacant. And the Divine restraining force against Lawless One will finally be removed. Gulp! I truly believe Pope Benedict XVI is the last Pope, as prophecied.
How did this come to be?
Speculation: The Lawless One entered the world, in a way that parallels in the inverse of how our Saviour Jesus Christ, Word, Second Person of the Holy Trinity entered the world and incarnated as Man. A tiny little deceptive misuse of a word, missed by everyone, Munus, was the gateway through which evil incarnated. Mary said “Let it be done unto me according to Thy Word”. Anti-church said “Did God really say … ‘Munus’? Obedience, vs disobedience.
In a forgotten, misbegotten stable hidden from the world – a Savior was born to redeem mankind from sin.
In the palaces and halls of power of the Vatican – an antipope was elected to lead mankind into sin.
In both cases, no one contemporary to the reality shift knew the gravity of what had just entered into the heart of the world. But the consequences of *each* were, are, fully revealed in time so they no one is left ignorant and ALL ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE.
