A CHALLENGE TO MY PROTESTANT FRIENDS

He observes that Protestants claim all of Christian history for themselves, that it was always Protestant in nature, and that all the Protestant “reformers” in the re-formation did was correct the many errors of the Catholic “denomination”. His challenge: find any non-heretical Christian from the first 1,000 who *denied* the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. He doesn’t understand how such grand, comprehensive error is possible.
As a former proddie (non-denominational) I can tell exactly how this is possible. Protestants don’t know history. Protestants don’t care to know it – they just assume without thinking, it all belongs to them because that is what every Pastor in the land tells them to believe. It is assumed. Their claim: the Bible is all Christians have ever had, wanted or needed – and the Bible is so clear that anyone who reads it will always come to the correct theology if they are “led by the Holy Spirit” – Christians lost their way after Constantine, but found it again with Martin Luther, Calvin, Zwingli.
In short: Protestant custodianship of Christianity just is. We saved it from itself.
I became Catholic partly because of the growing multiplicity of widely diverse opinions about what the Bible says – even the number of Translations of the Bible itself (“source of *all* truth”, remember) which were incompatible one with another.
Out of the growing anarchy and chaos, I became aware of actual Church history for the first time. I went all the way back to the 1600’s (!) – to those who re-gained Christendom from the heretics. But it was in Italy, touring the Cathedrals and ancient Churches and seeing the strange and beautiful sights and smells and motions rooted in times far, far, far beyond my grasp of ancient Protestant history that I first became aware my historical understanding was that of a child – an ignorant but well meaning child. I got outside of myself, for the first time.
It was when I realized that I knew nothing and less than nothing, and that the actual Faith was far bigger, far deeper, more ancient and unified than anything I’d ever known – that the Protestant theories just collapsed for me … almost in an instant; a conversion experience.
Which is why the Vatican II attempt to erase history is so recognizeable to me – the precise opposite of why I converted. I gave up much very personal to me to join the Catholic Church – intact, entire, whole … One, Holy, Apostolic.
My love for the actual Church that transcends time is visceral. My hatred of the pale, parallel imitation, the same. I found the Pearl. I will settle for nothing less than the Pearl which is of great price.

I just read an article about a Cracker Barrel supervisor who witnessed her young waitress being assaulted at a locked entry door. She opened the door, pulled the young lady in, and was shot by the assailant. She gave her life for an employee. She loved her young employee so much, she ran directly into the face of certain death to save the young life.
Now compare that to the hand wringing and emotional sads of the 1P5 author, so common in those who, when it comes down to it, don’t mind standing passively and idly by while the Liturgical and Canonical patrimony from every year prior to 1964 is disposed of like used tissue; murdered as it were.

What they are doing in this active and vigorous is more violent than the robbery – murder at Cracker Barrel. The Catholic Church has never seen anything even remotely like it. There has always been a firewall of Faithful to man the lines. Now? Stop unduly disturbing our unity around the New and Improved Church Exciting (NICE for short)!
Before bravery can happen, a man needs to know what is important, what is worth dying for (if anything).
Philip Primeau … allow me to introduce you to the Council if Trent, its defined De Fide Dogmas, its Liturgy … EVERYTHING that came out of Trent – in union with EVERYTHING that came before and after (until the disastrous Council). THAT is unity, not just a false peace among the living caused by SUBMISSION – *not Christian unity* – to violent theological acts against the Faith.
Unity – true Christian unity – is across time into heaven itself. It is not new in any way. Because it is perfect. So you see – if you are actually Catholic, Philip, then you would also be a “Trad”. Because we are ONE: past, present, future. Change is not preference … it is violence against God.
Why must anyone stop celebrating the most perfect and holy thing in the history of the world, Philip? No one can compel that without our complicity in the spiritual violence.
