Uh oh! The sunflower logo launched on Jill’s mask and dress? This floral motif of choice is sure to be foisted upon us in jewelry and fashion collections, in dinnerware and decorative merchandise, in Spring catalogs and stores wherever. The “flower power” culture of the 1960’s seems to have been resurrected, and just in time for an election year. The sunflower is the new daisy.
Anyone remember Lyndon Johnson’s 1964 political campaign commercial that came straight from Madison Avenue? Featured was a daisy being plucked by a little girl, sort of like a clock ticking down to a nuclear doomsday. Sidney Myers, creative director, said that his ad agency was “on a crusade” to keep Goldwater from becoming president. Robert Mann wrote a book about it, “Daisy Petals and Mushroom Clouds.” The daisy, pictured stuck in the gun barrel, soon became the “peace and love” symbol of the “Flower Children.” In 1967, a Human Be-In was held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, prelude to a “Summer of Love” in the Haight-Ashbury district with its counterculture “flower power” stickers and infamous psychedelia.
Pre-Christian Slavs in Ukraine once worshipped the sun and its golden botanical proxy, the sunflower (its blooms fixed Eastward where the sun rises). Ironically, the Greek Orthodox Church, once established in the 11th Century, played a pivotal role in the fixation: as public penance, it forbade the use of butter or lard for cooking during Lent, so sunflower oil became the popular alternative, huge fields of these plants still growing all over Ukraine and parts of Russia.
