FRANCIS’ CONSECRATION: ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT
TODAY IS THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS.
I remember reading about Steve Skojec’s journey *away* from the Catholic Faith. We all enjoy reading and hearing about converts’ journey *into* the Catholic Faith; not so much to witness, see and hear details about the the other direction. I remember feeling bad for him, having been part of his blogging efforts since his private blogging prior to his 1P5 days in 2013. He was obviously affected in some ways by his heavy investments of time in the Twittersphere/commentariat with fellow Catholics, and specifically fellow “Trads”.
I know there was more to it than just that, but in his own words the Twitter experience, especially his interchanges with “Trads” (like me) broke him – the pervasive nastiness, sanctimony, self-righteousness and lack of charity presented towards those who disagreed with another’s stated position.
My takeaway then was that he should have spent less time on Twitter and comments because these present a distorted view of the Faith – especially if it is affecting his Catholic faith.
As with most things – easy to say, less easy to do.
Well, now I can personally relate – having spent the last few days in a really distasteful exchange (on the secular topic of the Ukraine conflict) in a blog which I will not personally name. Having interchanged with these same people on other topics over the years and having been in agreement with them on everything over the years (yes, years; friendly exchanges) … it was an eye opening experience to be on the receiving end of Catholic righteous indignation and wrath and these same people (behind the avatars and screen names). There was no sharing of thoughts. No questions and requests for clarification. There was, instead, a looking for weakness and exploiting weakness when possible … in order to “win”; to defeat their new enemy who dared to enter the sacrosanct thread that declared Putin evil/Zelensky good; and a growing venom that very much recalled to my mind the experience described by Steve Skojec.
It was gross. And more than a little disturbing.
I’m not saying I was innocent, even though I like to think I was not like these people. But, my goodness! That is about as far from Christian charity as I can imagine. And I’m sure everyone there, if they are reading this now, is of the opinion: “But *mine* is a righteous anger, expressed for the advancement of God’s kingdom and justice”.
Right. Everyone thinks that. A real eye opener – because it made me realize … *that is more likely than not *ME* – no better than them; same.
I’m done.
To all you Catholics out there reading this – Charity first, middle and last. It matters not whether you are right or wrong, whether you won the argument, scored the most points, left your victim on the field as your fellows admire you as you proudly leave the digital field of battle … “If you have not Charity, you are nothing (I Cor 13:2).
I think the medium itself is evil.
The spirit of Satan is obviously everywhere about us these days, and I am personally convicted by the conversation I described that I also am on the wrong side. I am myself using his tools and pretending that I didn’t just eat the same apple that doomed Eve. Beware! posting Catholics, that it doesn’t consume you and harm or destroy your own faith. Winning battles is relatively easy. Loving your enemy; or just someone who disagrees with your politics – THAT is the fight of Faith.
