Greg Erlandson, editor of CNS, posits that there is really no way to connect the current collapse of the Catholic Church to the moment the collapse began – the completion of the II Vatican Council and the beginning of its penumbras and governing Constitutions. He says …

“We can never know”: the best description of Modernist philosophy.
Actually we have 2,000 years of Sacred Tradition to guide us to understanding how it might have gone “had the Church done nothing”: expanding Vocations and baptized members right up to the moment of “aggiornamento”; collapsing and morally polluted after.
The Church is and has always been a solid Ark for two millenia, as designed by our Divine Head, Jesus Christ. All other pale imitations, through time, come and go. The RCC, the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church remains, as ever. What do we see now? NuChurch is spinning off into irrelevant, unwanted oblivion. It is what it is.
What is this word, *Aggiornamento* – an Italian word, used by Pope John XXIII to make palitable the aim of the revolutionary Council? What does it mean? Modernism – the mother of all heresies – hidden behind a nice sounding Italian word.
And so, call it what it is – Modernism is enshrined in the Vatican II NuChurch, re-branded as aggiornamento. And the fruits of it are as directly connected to the source as is the math 2+2=4: (Loss of God) + (Gain of the World) = Collapse of RCC.
