Was wondering about the papal “peace-in” at the Colosseum a couple days ago, and so I watched the first pompous half-hour on a podcast. You were right, Frank, a grandiose PR stunt worthy of Titus (whose ceremonial arch still stands in the background on the old Via Sacra) himself.
The connecting theme of the opening prayers by diverse prelates was of course “Pace.” Instead of playing his assigned role of Emcee, Francis simply nodded off in his wheelchair and appeared to be out of it during all the orisons. When he was supposed to say a few words, an attendant had to sort of wake Francis up and show him his cue on the program. Even more striking was “peace” being prayed for as if it were a sort of commodity, a gift to be gratuitously bestowed upon and received free of charge by the world… in other words, in the exact same way indigenous (pagan) peoples prayed to particular spirits for rain or a good harvest.
Even the Greeks and Romans knew better than that! Both associated with peace and political calm, the Roman goddess Pax and the Greek goddess Eirene were invoked in rituals that involved human quid pro quo responsibility. Peace was based upon mutual cooperation between the gods and the citizens. This harmony was maintained through a complex system of religious piety: only when the gods received honor, glorification, sacrifice, and prayer from mankind, could mankind expect peace and protection from the gods.
Only afterwards, outside the Colosseum, did Francis come to life,, waving at the bench-warmers, smiling for photographers, beaming at those proffering him presents, warmly glad-handing dignitaries and reps from international “faith communities.” It was all too much, but had nothing to do with the venue which, since the time of Constantine, was dedicated to the early Christian martyrs, the “blood of the Church.”
