If I read the Mundabor essay correctly, based on their “culpable ignorance” of Catholicism, the earthquake victims of Sunni eastern Turkey and northern Syria have been relegated to hell.
First of all, connecting the earthly tragedy of these people to the eternal tragedy of hell is graceless and ill-advised. Why presume that they should have known better, assume that they chose porn over the Gospel, suppose that they had all kinds of chances but deliberately turned their backs on Christ as Lord?
I have traveled rather extensively in those parts and can assure readers that, although the lands are archeologically rich and historically famous, the majority of villagers and townspeople are very poor “in spirit and in truth.” The average standard of living, of education, of health, of infrastructure, of high tech access, is undeniably low. Indeed, since the fall of the Christian Byzantium to the Sunni Sultans in the 15th century, Islam has been virtually the sole religion of the Turks, becoming a total way of life, with legal, political, economic, social, military components. The Quran does not allow freedom of religion and expression.. The very concept of human rights is considered a “Judeo-Christian invention” and inadmissible in Islam.
Of course, those who were able to travel, live, study for degrees, and work abroad, those with elitist financial means and their family’s permission to do so, could and should have “known better.” Nevertheless, spare us a blanket ad hominem condemnation in the wake of the catastrophe. Please bear in mind that the homespun majority live in the fetters of deprivation and ingenuous illiteracy.
