9 Thoughts on “Canon212 Update: Synodality is Brainwashing

The marital debt is a legitimate Catholic teaching, taught both biblically and reaffirmed by the Angelic Doctor. One is free to disagree with the term “debt”, but the truth remains. It’s not a one-sided coin, it’s a reciprocal debt that tends to weigh more heavily on the woman because men generally have a larger sexual appetite. That said, men ought to be able to read their wives and exhibit temperance in this matter. Just because the Gordon’s are sometimes off-putting doesn’t make this teaching any less sound. That it may or may not have been practiced widespread is also of no consequence, as 96% of “Catholics” supposedly use birth control, but that doesn’t change the fact they shouldn’t.

Pope Francis is using this idea of meekness as a supremely Christian quality for a reason: that being to silence those who would defend the Church’s teaching, suggesting to these Catholics that any form of argument, in defence of one’s beliefs, is a form of pride. Francis uses every trick in the book, sneakily or brazenly to muzzle dissension to the plans he has for the path he wants the Church to follow. Here he is insinuating that if you are not meekly silent in the face of the dismantling of the Faith, you are full of pride.

One of the best cards he has to play (and he knows it) is in taking advantage of the simple goodness of innocent men….did he not refer to Cardinal Müller as ‘childish’ at one point ……? What he saw in fact was a ‘childlike’ quality which is a virtue in a Christian.

But this goodness can bring with it a naivety. Pope Francis is not being manipulated by anyone. Guile is written on his face, plain to see. Surely the last nine years must convince anyone that he is the master craftsman intent on disfiguring the beautiful face of the Catholic Church.

Take the situation with the traditional Latin Mass. The Pope might as well be saying as Henry 2nd said of Thomas Becket “ Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest!” Only it is this troublesome Mass that has to be done away with now.

People constantly ask why Francis is doing this. It is so obvious. The traditional Latin Mass in its essence encapsulates the incomparable beauty of the Church: and from this beauty is borne devotion, vocations, children, deeply committed Catholics. These will not easily assimilate into the bland concoction he has in mind for his new religion.

It is a confounded stumbling block for him.

Hi Frank. I look forward to your commentary everyday. Your sense of humor is a comic relief sorely needed. I also agree that the term ‘marital debt’ is off putting. Not the teaching of the Church regarding marriage, just the image the world would have us think of, a sort of slavery. So using it is working to ingrain a false understanding of obedience in marriage.
I read this book recently and it has a great explanation of what obedience in marriage really means. God bless you, Frank.

Dorothy, I think that the ‘marital debt’ concept does reflect Church teaching, but I’m finding it sort of twisted into something sounding a bit, as you say, like slavery, or at least forced suffering. Someone tweeted a more positive look yesterday: ‘The more a husband acts like a man, the more inspired his wife will be to act like a woman,’ and exactly vice versa.

That’s a really good quote, Frank. Thanks.

  5. Marital debt: there is only one debt that matters to me – that to my Redeemer Jesus Christ who saved me, and saves me from all my sins, including that of concupiscence, including that directed toward my wife. Jesus saves me from all the various temporal and temporary desires of the flesh. As He does, he reveals all the everlasting desires of eternal union with God, the Blessed Mother, the Angels and Saints within the Beatific Vision.

The “Marital Debt”, as it is known, has got it all wrong. It is a wrong turn; a misbegotten marital premise.

Within marriage we pursue God together within the activities of the world we live in. Within marriage we also produce children to love and serve God in this life and forever in heaven – for as long and as many as God wills for us. Period. Beyond that … chastity … not “marital debt”. Our debt is to God alone.
