Frank, I read this somewhere a while ago but it seemed an appropriate prayer for Francis to me.
“Dear God,
Please open his eyes or close them forever.”
Wag of the finger to FrancisCardinal Surney [sp.?] wrongly asserting and assuming past papal bulls to be just a joke. Somebody get him a history book! Perhaps I can help:
Early in the materialistic, avaricious “glorydays” of European colonialism, Rome struck back. Pope Eugene IV [“Creator Omnium”] forbade Spain and Portugal to raid the Canary islands and enforce slavery on sugar plantations in the 15th century. Two papal edicts of excommunication from the Church did nothing to stop the Iberians.
Pope Paul III [“Sublimus Deus”] formally condemned and excommunicated “all those, whatever their dignity, condition, or status, who have an inhuman attitude to the human race and, for profit, presume to reduce indigenous peoples of the West or South to slavery.” Pope Paul III defined slavery as intrinsically (always and everywhere) evil; he described enslavers as “satellites of Satan” and declared them “anathema” (i.e. banned by ecclesiastical authority and formal expulsion from the Church). Pope Urban VIII reaffirmed Pope Paul’s automatic excommunication on all who traded or kept slaves.
But the official opposition of Rome had no impact on the rising flow of slaves. In fact, the mercantile powers, fronted by bankers and grifters, made it a capital crime to publish or distribute any Papal anti-slavery edicts in Europe or in the New World colonies. As if in lockstep, the 16th century Protestant Revolt led by Luther mocked Papal authority and boldly justified ongoing colonialism.
Protestant mercenaries sacked Rome, “the raping, killing, burning, stealing. not seen since the 5th century.” Luther insisted that there was no real difference between clergy and laity, that religion comes from within your own self, that Scripture is self-authenticating… everyone has the right to interpret the Bible according to personal judgment. Calvin developed and highlighted Luther’s belief in Predestination… in fact, “having and keeping wealth are a sure sign of God’s favor, that good success in one’s work, family, and social life virtually guarantee Salvation.”
Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther. Pope Paul III excommunicated Henry VIII (self-declared head of the new Church of England). In 1645, Pope Paul convened the Ecumenical Council of Trent which decreed as heresy “Predestination” and “arbitrary, unilateral interpretations of the Bible.” Trent reaffirmed the Ten Commandments (versus the Protestant “10 suggestions”). The Council introduced the Roman Cathechism of the Catholic Church, and the Tridentine Missal (the Latin Mass liturgy).
Sorry about the typo:
Paul III convened the blessed Council of Trent in 1545.
Wow! Thank you again, Maxine.
