THE SUPERIORITY OF THE TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS
The Vicar of Stunts has done it again. Seems he felt free to raid Room II of the Treasury at St. Peter’s as if it were his personal cookie jar. The “Crux Vaticana,” albeit the most important extant reliquary of the True Cross and used for more than thousand years in solemn Papal processions and Masses, has apparently been dismantled for a sacrilegious display in Charles’ coronation love fest.
Few today know or care that this relic of the True Cross was given in solemn, sacred trust by Justin II, Emperor of Constantinople, to Pope John III at a time when Lombard tribes overran Italy and threatened the survival of Roman Catholicism itself. The invaders reintroduced the Arian heresy (i.e. claiming that the Son of God was created by the Father and so was neither coeternal nor consubstantial with the Father). Across the piece is written in Latin: “With the wood with which Christ conquered man’s enemy, Justin gives his help to Rome…”
How did Justin II have it in the first place? Traditional beliefs held that, at Golgotha, the cross was thrown into a hole in the ground, along with others. Arriving in the Holy Land in 326, Constantine’s mother, Empress St. Helena, discovered the True Cross under one of Hadrian’s temples in a remodeled Jerusalem. She ordered there the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, site of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. She had relics of the Passion and some fragments of the True Cross taken to Constantinople (Byzantium) and to Rome, her imperial palace enclosing the “Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.”
Three centuries later (and half a century after Justin II), pro-Islamic Persians captured Jerusalem and stole the True Cross. Byzantine Emperor Heraclius waged the first “Crusader” war. In an historic victory procession, Haraclius brought the True Cross to Constantinople where it was placed in the Hagia Sophia, Church of Holy Wisdom. This event is still commemorated on September 14, the feast of “The Exaltation of the Holy Cross.”
Not long after, due to never-ending threats to its protection, the True Cross was divided into five large holy relics to be safely housed in the five “Apostolic” cities: Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and Rome.
