The real Janissaries were a slave army of Byzantine Christians forced into Islam and lifetime service of the Sunni Sultans. Mehmet II famously used canons to break down the walls of Constantinople, bastion of Christianity in the East for over 1000 years. His Janissaries were sent in first to direct a five-hour blitz of the inner-city. Thousands of Byzantine martyrs were impaled, hacked to pieces, or enslaved. The Janissaries marched Emperor Constantine’s beheaded body around the ruined city, then declared the new headquarters of the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922).
