The Dolan photo you’re talking about reminds me of “I’m a Little Teapot.”

Contrary to the snide Eccles piece, I found the Coronation ceremony to be no laughing matter. Quite the contrary. Since the days of Pope Pius XII, how often have we witnessed in a Catholic Church the reverent solemnity of four-part choirs singing the Gloria and other liturgical hymns in Latin like Te Deum Laudamus dating back to the 4th century. How often have post-Vatican II Catholics ever even seen the splendid vestments of formal ceremony or been uplifted by the grandeur of orchestra and church bells?

Despite the FrancisBans in 2021 and 2023, what irony that the leftover trappings of the traditional Latin High Mass remain respected in the Anglican Church and at Westminster Abbey in particular (burial site of King Saint Edward the Confessor who had it first built and consecrated to St. Peter in the 11th century).

Yes, there were awesome highlights, as when Charles placed his hand on the Bible: “Sir, to keep you ever mindful of the law and the Gospel of God as the Rule for the whole life and government of Christian Princes, receive this Book, the most valuable thing that this world affords. Here is Wisdom; This is the royal Law.” The anthem “confortare” was sung: “Be strong, and show thy worth: keep the Commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in His ways.”

Two shards of the True Cross were carried in a gold cruciform reliquary by the Archbishop of Wales, or his proxy, leading the entire Coronation procession. Also honored were the ancient St Augustine Gospels, once presented by Pope Gregory the Great to St Augustine of Canterbury who brought them to England in the 6th century.

The chrism used in Charles’ Confirmation “in the service to God” was made from olives pressed outside of Bethlehem and harvested on the Mount of Olives itself. The oil was co-consecrated by the Patriarch of Jerusalem and Archbishop in Jerusalem (present at the ceremony, “to emphasise the strong historic link between the Coronation, The Old Testament and the Holy Land…”
Commemorated also, the 14th century legend in which Mary appeared to Archbishop Thomas Becket and presented him with a golden eagle and a vial of oil for anointing future Kings of England.

Although there was much more to be awed about in the coronation liturgy, everything can suddenly seem dissonant and hollow when we remember that Henry VIII declared himself “pope” of the Church of England and made Catholicism illegal. Excommunicated by Pope Paul III, King Henry Tudor expropriated all monasteries and Church lands. Westminster Abbey was dissolved by Elizabeth I in 1559 and became a royal Anglican church. All Catholic property was looted, resettled, and taxed by the Crown. Resisting Catholic clergy and citizens were executed for treason.

The Tudors were succeeded by the Stuarts, their hapless King Charles I summarily executed with the nod of Cromwell and the Puritans due to his being pro-Catholic… or at least insufficiently anti-Catholic. After King Charles II, his brother King James II was accused of actually being a Roman Catholic and fled for his life to France under the protection of King Louis XIV.

    O tempora, O mores!
