What’s not to intrigue us about the list of Papal stopovers? Mongolia, about 200 miles northeast of Beijing, proved the most recent curiosity. After watching a bit of the televised broadcast of the quiescent Francis seated in a semicircle of reps promoting on cue their respective, assorted faiths, I did some research to try to make some sense out of it all.
In the Middle Ages, Mongolia was the place to be! Grandson of the Great Kahn Genghis, Kublai Kahn was the fifth King of the Mongols and Emperor of all of China. The officlal religion was Tengrist, a combination of Animism and Totemism. Their Shamans and of course the Kings (who were worshipped as gods) wore white. Christian Russia and Hungary cursed the conquering Kahn hordes, calling them “Tartars,” devils from Tartarus (Hell),
In Xanadu, their capital, the Kublai Khan court was replete with lotus-eaters, sorcerers and believers in the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, i.e. harnessing the flow of energy (chi, Xi) to create a harmonized, tranquillized space. Adventurer Marco Polo described the Xanadu “pleasure dome” with its life-size statues of men and beasts alike. In his park, the Khan kept every kind of wild animal and bird, also built a palace with golden Chinese dragons as pillars propping up the roof.
In a way, the ”Park” was a microcosm of the Mongolian Empire which came to embrace Tibetan Buddhism and to profess expedient and useful “friendships” with Islam,” Eastern Orthodoxy, and Nestorian Christianity (which claimed that Mary was the mother of Christ but not the mother of God), etc.
So, yes, despite the passage of time, Francis, the somnolent Sinophile man in white, fits right in. Xanadu is and was the stuff of dreams and legends. It’s all magic and it’s all good (cf. Andy Warhol). Makes one think of Olivia Newton John’s hit song in the 70’s, or Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem a century before:
