It’s no secret that the post-World War II wave of atheism, agnosticism, and skepticism which swept over the West rendered the Faith of so many irrelevant and empty. The Existentialist “theater of the absurd” (e.g. Waiting for Godot, No Exit, Rhinoceros…) entertained with a cast of self-condemned drop outs,
cowards, “dead men walking” in a lock-up where initiative, personality, intellect and achievement were unknown. Hannah Arendt summed up that “the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true.”
But today’s gay new world has changed the rules of the game. It seems that everyone — from the Maître D’ of Santa Marta to the kid on the block with his I-phone or couch potatoes at home watching Warsaw along with their Siris and Alexas–is playing with impunity the “God card.”
Bishop Strickland just hit the nail on the head when he recently proclaimed: “Let us resist the currents of our time which seek to create a world in ‘our’ image.. Let us resist the voices that seek to twist, alter, and update the truth [of the Gospel of Christ] until it is unrecognizable and no longer rooted in reality…Let us open our eyes to the evil forces that bring division and darkness, even as they claim to offer a new way for humanity.”
