The Eucharistic Congress, climax of the current U.S. pilgrimages ending in July, will have a great variety of speakers and sponsors, lay and clergy. However spectacular the venue and the crowds, let’s not forget that Francis’ surrogate Cardinal Blase Cupich will be prominent among them, as well as Cardinal Christophe Pierre (“Apostolic Nuncio” to the United States since 2016), famous for fawning over Francis as “a man of vision” and “a man of prayer” and as the one “chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead the Church at this moment in history.” As we await yet another “Beyond the Frontiers” lovefest, may we at least be spared Francis’ favorite entertainment stunts, like a rain dance, Smudgepot bonfire, or a Mother Earth pipe and drum parade.
