Calling someone a witch, now illegal? Not so in Salem, MA.
In his book, “Killing the Witches,” Bill O’Reilly tells us that, while the First Amendment guarantees religious freedom, “there is no prohibition of fanaticism.” Indeed, he reports that, three hundred years after the witch trials, a million tourists from around the world still flock to Salem to celebrate “haunted happenings” and cult legacy. “The city fathers aggressively protect that image, so as not to disturb the money flow.” Salem has become a haven for women and men who practice the black arts, or pretend to… the Witch City Mall sells seances and psychic readings…business owners promote themselves as vampires and proponents of witchcraft and magic. The pentagram is features prominently on signs…”
O’Reilly writes that “the definition of a witch hunt has expanded to include the socio-political targeting that is now a part of modern society.” Ironically, in Salem, “a very active community of the victims’ descendents is still emotional about the witch hunt.” They established the “Salem Award for Human Rights and Social Justice” to recognize individuals or groups confronted by accusations and intolerance.
