2 Thoughts on “Canon212 Update: Francis’s Virtual Reality is About To Get Hacked

A comment on one of the Canon 212 stories, Frank, the one about the Catholic mom speaking to Fr. Matthew Schneider “I know Catholics who have lost their jobs because their employers used your writing to deny their religious exemptions.”.

This should NEVER happen, and here’s why. I too, had to research when employed during Covid, in education, and here is what I learned via, I believe, the superb Thomas More Society, I hope I am crediting the right source, I believe so.

Applying for a religious exemption during such a time, does NOT rely on your employer receiving your exemption request and sitting down and saying to himself or a board for that matter, “Hm, does Joe Blow in Sales REALLY believe he should have an exemption because his faith in Jesus Christ demands it?”, where a flunkie in Marketing might add, “Gee I don’t know if he’s sincere, after all we know he doesn’t go to church on Sundays”, and other such deliberations. It is NOT for an employer to decide our faith status, in fact, the law prohibits this. The exemption depends on you ASKING for it, NOT THE JUDGMENT YOUR EMPLOYER MAKES ABOUT YOUR RELIGIOUS SINCERITY, NOR HOWEVER YOUR POPE OR RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY FEELS ABOUT IT.
Sorry, I have to yell, few people understand this. So for any employer to “deny” such a request, truth be told he is putting himself or his entity at legal risk, because he does not have that authority. Does this happen and people get away with it? Oh surely, but it is still not legal as far as I understood law to mean from the guidance supplied by the Thomas More Society at that time.

NO ONE, including your pastor or bishop or pope for that matter, can testify or deny YOUR faith or lack thereof, your understanding of that faith, pertaining to God’s expectations of you. This is why we don’t ever need any “letter” from your pastor or minister or rabbi for such things, and it is silly to acquiesce to that. We need know the law in order to protect ourselves from such absurd requests.
I hope this helps. God forbid we find ourselves in such circumstances again, but it doesn’t hurt to know what the law indicates.
One last thought, the reason they cannot ask for your “letter” from a minister etc would be because in that case the government IS making a choice in favor of one religion over another (they say yes to the Protestant and no to the Catholic). This would be a contradiction to the laws that govern the separation of church and state.
I hope I have no misrepresented the law. I am not involved in law in any way, this is only what I understood to be the case from what I researched. But my employer did stop asking for these letters after I informed them. 😉

And this is why Fr. Matthew Schneider’s writing on exemptions or Covid shots, nor any other priest, should have the slightest impact on whether or not someone gets a religious exemption. Pope Francis doesn’t matter, either. Not relevant. It is your understanding and religious belief, not theirs.
