4 Thoughts on “Canon212 Update: I Pray That Francis Revokes His Gilligan’s Island Nativity?

The Vatican’s Nativity scene will be set in the early 1900’s, not ancient times. I collect Nativities and in addition to traditional scenes have Nativities representing India, Native Americans with a tipi and a buffalo as the cow, Inuit (Baby Christ in His little fur hat!), a beautiful hand made clay African Nativity scene, a Mexican Nativity, plus many more.

The Blessed Mother is reflected as in a prism, i.e., Our Lady of Guadeloupe as an Aztec, The Black Madonna, Our Lady of La Vang (Chinese Mother and Child), and so forth all over the world. She is one…Our Blessed Mother…but reflected for all people in different cultures as their own even while they know she was Jewish.

Therefore, while knowing that Christ was born a Jew in Belhlehem 2000 years ago, is it wrong that Nativity scenes are likewise a reflection of different cultures, of people across the planet making Christ their own?

Does this make Francis the “Skipper”? And who is Gilligan? Cardinal Tucho Fernandez?

  3. Years ago, Frank predicted that the Vatican could become some sort of a theme park. He was not mistaken, and this year’s “Nativity Lagoon” does not disappoint.
We see images of the holy family huddled in a roundhouse hut much like those of “friendly villagers” on indigenous islands in the South Seas. Furthermore, the wise men are programmed to be paddled in on a fisherman’s canoe, perhaps (as at any self-respecting Polynesian Culture Center) welcomed by presentations of the Kukui Nut lei and some sort of “Breath of Life” pageant with song, dance, fire, and fish kabob.

Yes, nothing’s too far-fetched for Francis. For all we know, he had Disney’s Magic Kingdom and “It’s a Small World After All” puppet show and boat ride in mind. That’s a whole other story.
