The show must go on. Looks like the FrancisChurch production company has come up with its new star.
Samuel Goldwyn once said, “When I want your opinion I will give it to you.” So it appears in Rome. People were getting tired of the “shabby chic” look, and the “humble pie” playbook wasn’t much of a money maker after all. Now, the Vatican Hill Costume and Set Departments have clearly been alerted to bring back elegant “Period Piece” actors and entertainment, historical drama with a Woke twist. They’re betting on jaded audiences being once again thrilled and charmed, and duly reaching for their wallets… unaware or uncaring that it’s the same old Vat II story board under new management.
What’s in a name? Leo is no “Lion of Judah,” albeit bear in mind that all cats keep their sharp claws fully retracted when moving about routinely or when sneaking up on their prey. What we got today in Paul VI Hall was a lot of meowing about the “loveless language” of press agents and yawn-worthy purring about “Peace through blather” “Peace through neutrality” “peace through universal liberality” (i.e. more catnip from his loggia speech last week).
We remember Matthew 10 (and check out verse 34…). Leo claimed nothing of the kind in his speech this morning. Missing also was an introductory clip of the MGM lion in a gilded frame: “Ars Gratia Artis.”
