The Jubi-Leo Midsummer Youth Fest looks to be a replay of “Woodstock” twenty-six years ago. Also held in Rome (New York), that show was overshadowed by dangerously high summer temperatures, gouged food and water prices, poor sanitation, sexual harassment and rapes, rioting, looting, vandalism, arson, violence, and thousands of medical emergencies. Woodstock 1999 was conceived and executed as a commercial venture with venue hosts and corporate sponsors receiving several millions. [Converting the 1999 dollar to today’s dollar value] The Oneida County Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated that festival attendees spent as much as $77 million that weekend. Vendors paid $1000 to just to have stands.
Most outside food and drink was confiscated by security (the Peace Patrol), though concertgoers reported that guards often overlooked or were bribed to ignore predators and degenerates bringing in drugs and alcohol. The crowd’s candlelight vigils easily started bonfires; plywood and trash strewn around the site used to fuel fire spreading to vendor booths and tents. The post-festival cleanup took three weeks.
So now Rome plans to welcome an untold million young adults, mandatory Pilgrim Cards and pricey Pilgrim Kits in hand, ready to pray at the Circus Maximus, camp out at the hip University campus of Tor Vergata, and hail the arrival of Rock Star Leo performing live on stage… perhaps, why not, one might even imagine the haunting ghosts of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the wings and gleefully jamming along.
