Like you say Frank there are a lot of ways to look at an illegitimate Pope. Can you image Our Lord speaking to Peter and saying, I know you love money, sodomy, and all kind of heresies but you are going to have my divine protection anyway, even if you try to build an entirely different church. That will be ok I’m still with you.
Our Lord told Peter that he had prayed for him that his faith would not fail him. It was Peter’s faith that our Lord praised not some kind of weak human being that could easily fail. The notion that a Pope can be a successor of Peter and be utterly faithless and against the Faith seems completely absurd. There is no Divine Protection for such a man. He has deposed himself (if he ever were fairly elected) The notion that a Pope can be a Pope in his person and rule by divine right, without faith, strikes me as a jesuitical construction of the last 500 years. No wonder, I find, that the matter has been brought to a full blown crisis by a so called Jesuit Pope.
Laurence’s piece is yet another crack in the dam of Bergoglioism. He puts a nice light on the fact that thinking Francis is the pope is not without consequence to serious Catholic teachings about the Church. It’s a point I think Barnhardt has already made (hence her emphasis on getting our “base premise” right) but which Laurence seems to make in his own, and very timely, way. At any rate, it calls to mind the wisdom of Aristotle (and Aquinas): “The least initial deviation from the truth is multiplied later a thousandfold.”
I am Catholic today for stumbling on Barnhardt; and will remain Catholic for following her logic. Those who call us schmatics (Skojec and Dr. Marshall), do more harm to the papacy then even Bergoglio.
I benefitted from Barnhardt’s analysis in a similar way. In the end, I found her position able to resolve more difficulties than her opponents’, and all without jeopardizing Catholic teaching. So I ultimately have to give it to her (the explanatory power of a theory is a strong indication of its truth).
As for others charging schism: Do they not see that *everybody’s* at risk of schism here, at least materially? That is in large part why the issue of our pope’s identity is so important. Submit to the wrong man and you’re failing to submit to the Roman Pontiff.
