5 Thoughts on “Canon212 Update: Don’t Be ‘Militant’ For The Wrong Leaders

Lest we forget: In November 2016, just outside the Kremlin, President Putin and Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, unveiled a monumental statue dedicated to the “Holy Great Prince Vladimir, Equal of the Apostles, and Christianiser of Russia” (canonized in the 13th century, his feast day celebrated by both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches). “He laid the moral foundation on which our lives are still based today. It was a strong moral bearing, solidarity and unity which helped our ancestors overcome difficulties and win victories for the glory of the fatherland, making it stronger and greater with each generation,” said Putin. “Today it is our duty to stand together against contemporary challenges and threats, using our spiritual legacy and our invaluable traditions of unity to go forward and continue our thousand-year history.” The patriarch Kirill added that St. Vladimir’s descendants currently lived in many countries, and “it’s bad if the children forget that they have the same father”.

Already years ago, BBC reported that ” Since Vladimir Putin’s return to power in 2012, the Church has become visible in practically all spheres of public life in Russia, from charity drives to science and the army. Pictures of Orthodox priests blessing new weapons and even space rockets have drawn much criticism from [Communist] commentators. Also from BBC News: “According to Alexander Dugin, a prominent Russian ideologue banned in Ukraine, Russia’s role is to advocate conservatism as a weapon against the West’s “ultra-liberal values” such as same-sex marriage. Russia’s Orthodox Church, which was suppressed in Soviet times, has been experiencing a steady revival under President Putin [who] is planning to build 200 new churches in Moscow, arguing that congregations are growing again.”

Archbishop Vigano in his most recent commentary pointed out Moscow’s historical title as “the third Rome.” How so? Well, the 10th century Christian Byzantine emperor Basil II married his sister Anna (“born to the purple”) to the newly converted Vladimir of Kiev, Prince of the Rus. Christianity then became the official religion of Russia (from the Scandanavian Baltic to the Black Sea), and the fearsome Rus Varangian warriors became imperial Byzantine guardsmen.

Constantinople was called “the second Rome” because, for the 1000 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the “Romanoi” of the Eastern Empire were entrusted to preserve Christianity, Roman law, Classical art. When Constantinople finally fell to the Islamic sultans after seven centuries of wars. Princess Zoe, niece of the last emperor Constantine XI, married Czar (Caesar) Ivan III, Grand Prince of Moscow and Grand Prince of all Rus. The city of Moscow with imperial title of THIRD ROME became heir to the political and cultural legacy of Christian Byzantium. Russian Orthodoxy remained State Church under the Romanov dynasty until the Bolshevik Communist Revolution in 1917. The state Vladimir ruled over, Kievan Rus, later disintegrated, and both modern-day Ukraine and Russia consider him the founder of their states.

“Ironically, it appears that Russia’s Vladimir Putin is one of the few world leaders who recognizes the problem of the errors of Russia, for he has been an outspoken critic of many (perhaps most) of the Great Reset initiatives animated by those errors” [Robert Morrison]. While we can hardly expect consecration of Russia by any hierarchs in the West, especially now, the granite and bronze colossus of St. Vladimir overlooking Moscow and holding high a 56-foot cross is worth a thousand words.

Great job Frank, and we’re all going to have ulcers. I wish I could express how much in line with your opinions and thinking is here. Watching the inexplicable actions of Rorate Caeli and the others, the only thing I can say is it seems like the faithful Catholic groups are getting smaller and smaller as time goes on. We keep losing the people we imagined thought as we did, and it’s not to say at ALL that, oh well we are the only faithful, because we’re special. It’s not that at all. I cannot explain it except to say the last two years have been pretty rotten, but one gift from God is becoming more and more clear as time goes on here, spiritual discernment. Spiritual discernment is happening right in front of our eyes, and it has all along separated us from others, and as I said, as time goes on the group that sees things is getting more and more compressed.
With all the facts out there about what is actually going on in Russia and Ukraine, it is astounding to see what we are seeing. I expect Hollywood and the elites to be in support of Zelensky, after seeing his demonic video, that makes sense. And there are so many gullible people, who may be happy to find themselves agreeing with the mainstream for a change, after two years of being on the outside as unvaxxed pariahs. But to see faithful Christians, our fellow Catholics, criticize Abp. Vigano for his great observations, it’s eerie, worse than that. You know that saying if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging? We could say if you find yourself in a hole with Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, you better ask yourself what the hell you’re doing in that hole.

  4. Eric Sammons defines a “Trad”:

    – quote –

“What does it mean to be a “traditional Catholic?” If you listen to some of our critics, it means we must slavishly fit their stereotype of a 1950s white suburban middle class American Catholic … we must be blindly obedient to the pope, we must desire complete Vatican centralization of the Church, and we must reject every jot and tittle of Vatican II. We must believe that the Mass must be celebrated exactly as it was in the 1950’s for the rest of eternity. When a self-identified traditional Catholic strays even slightly from that script, the critics will yell, “Gotcha! You’re a hypocrite!”

That isn’t even close, Eric. That makes a nice Straw Man you can pierce and chop with your theological-rhetorical sword. That person you describe exists only in your angry mind, and the one you have created is easy to destroy – because he isnt real. He is a your bias speaking in public.”

    – end quote –

    1: 1950’s? No, every age – 1850, 1750,1550, 850, 350, 50 (the Jerusalem Council).
2: Not white suburban middle class – that is a racist canard – uncatholic, unbecoming of you.
3: Blindly obedient to the Pope? No, “blind” obedience to the Pope is not in the Apostles Creed. The Pope is not even in the Creed. The Creed is what we must believe. The Pope (importantly) must believe it too.
4: We must desire complete Vatican centralization of the Church? Why? The Catholic Church is an Apostolic Church in submission to the successor of St. Peter, whose will and government is expressed through the Vatican bureaucracy for a worldwide Church. The point is Peter in union with the Apostles, not the Vatican.
5: Why must we “reject every jot and tittle of Vatican II”? It was a damaging and fundamentally flawed Council, but not everything in it was evil – some things were. That which are in accord with Sacred Tradition may be accepted. That which is heretical must be rejected. That is De Fidei.
6: Mass must be celebrated just as it was in 1950? Why the fixation on 1950? The Tridentine Mass is *The Mass of Ages* – the Ages *includes* 1950, but is not restricted to it. It cannot be abrogated, by definition, because it belongs to *All Ages*.
7: When a Trad Catholic strays from the script – Gotcha”? No. When the Pope worships a demon from hell in the Vatican and St. Peter’s, not acceptable. When the Pope abrogates the Mass of All Ages as no longer operable, not acceptable. When he accepts adultery and sodomy and other sins to Communion, nope. Etc.

Fundamentally, what you get wrong, Eric, is that the Catholic Faith is not about us, it is about God. God comes to meet us in a very partial way, in a very particular Church that He established Himself, with very particular rules and very particular Doctrines. We cannot change any of it, fundamentally. It can develop. It *cannot change*. Change ended with revelation. It belongs to God. We cannot play with it. We cannot improve it. We cannot make it more relevant, more fun, more inclusive. It is an objective thing, and WE must conform to Her, not Her to us.

We go to Calvary in a carefully prescribed way and meet Jesus there in His act of sacrificial Redemption. We live in union with all other Catholics across time in exactly the same fundamental way, not because we are “Trads” (fixated on sentiment) but because we all have found, across time, the Pearl of Great Price which is unchangeable because it is Divine and perfect. We worship with the Great Cloud of Witnesses, Jesus Christ on His Cross at the Holy Sacrifice and we all get to heaven to be with Him forever in precisely the same way … BECAUSE HE ORDAINED IT SO.

How curious that De Mattei would stigmatize Russia as the “historic enemy of Christian Europe.” Perhaps he meant the 20th century USSR, but that’s quite different from “historic” Russia and Moscow, historically “the 3rd Rome.”

In the 8th century, Christian Pepin, King of the Franks, defeated the Arian pagan Lombards and gifted Pope Stephen with a central swathe of Italian territory known as “the Papal States.” Pepin’s son Charlemagne was crowned as Western Europe’s first “Holy Roman Emperor” by Pope Leo III. Charlemagne then proposed marriage to Christian Byzantine Empress Irene so that all imperial lands, East and West, would be united. Sadly, in a revolt led by Greek Monophysite heretics and pro-Islamic iconoclasts, Empress Irene died after being arrested, tonsured, and exiled.

Then there was Anna, princess royal of Byzantium. Once she married (saint) Vladimir, Prince of the Rus (988 A.D.), Christianity became the official religion of Eastern Europe from the Scandanavian Baltic to the Black Sea.

When the Seljuk Turks (Sunni Islamic warrior horsemen) had captured all of Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine and the Holy Land, Byzantine Emperor Alexius asked Pope Urban II to help him fight for the Christians of the East and to help free the holy cities. Facing a common threat, they made an alliance in 1095, and what followed were eight major Crusades to save Christendom.

But it was the Christians of the West, not those of the East, who betrayed their sacred spiritual trust. Italian mercenaries and rogue fanatics made “sweetheart deals” with sultans and in effect sold out the Red Cross. Venetians eventually sacked Constantinople itself, killing the Emperor, raping clergy, looting relics and sacred art from churches and monasteries. The Roman popes regularly excommunicated such men, even whole crusades, for treason. Regardless of its all-inclusive excommunication, Venice reveled in its sinful status as “pawnshop of Europe.”
