Fr. John Rickert, guest on Wm Briggs’ blog, really really needs Munus to = Ministerium. If they are not =, then he has a direct problem to resolve in his Catholic faith. So he turns to secular dictionaries and draws weak inferences from them to “prove” his case.
His case: two different words mean the same thing.
Wrong.
Munus, according to one of many Catholic sources, aligned with Tradition:

“Munus – A term derived from the Roman civil law, defined in the “Institutes” of Justinian as a “legal bond which by a legal necessity binds us to do something according to the laws of our State” (III, 13). It was a relation by which two persons were bound together (obligati) by a bond which the law recognized and enforced … (etc)”.
Munus is who the Pope *IS*.
Ministerium is what the Pope *DOES*.
That is why Canon Law sections 331,2,3,4 all refer to Munus in describing facets of the Papacy. Not one word, no not one, in Canon Law Papal sections 331, 332, 333, 334. Abdication? Also Munus.
Wm Briggs encourages us not to worry too much about this non-essential conflict.
Sorry to tell you, Wm Briggs – not non-essential … existential. Everything depends on it. This exercise in expediency of your guest columnist is only making things much, much worse; making resolution less likely; Divine Judgement more terrifying.

You are either bound together as Pope, or you are not. Only one man can be. One cannot remain bound, but retired from activity.

If *not* bound, then Fr. Rickert (and all such) should INSIST Bp Ratzinger leave the Vatican premises as an imposter and a fraud. Why is he still there? Why does no one care?
