Condemning Patriarch Kirill (Cyril) because of what he was or was not once upon a time is as uncharitable as it is jejune. Such logic would have us simply brand and repudiate Mary Magdalene as a whore, Paul as a killer of Christians, Peter as a betrayer of Our Lord, the Good Friday convert on the cross as a thief, Augustine as a sex offender, etc.
Nevertheless, there are lots of folks who would agree with you that Cyril is no good. For example, Rev. Stefano Caprio at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome sneers that “It’s the Orthodox Church in Russia that provides the ideological fuel for the Kremlin’s geopolitical ambitions, as well as the theological underpinnings for Putin’s anti-LGBTQ measures and other conservative social policies.”
Then, there is the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams who early this month said there was a strong case for expelling Cyril and the Russian Orthodox Church from the WCC. Too, too laughable! For one thing, the Patriarch of Moscow has been an actively involved member of the Central Committee and Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches since 1975. For another, Williams is no saint. His 10-year stint as Archbishop of Canterbury was marred by uber-liberal views, such as ordination of openly gay men as bishops and attempted adaptation of the English legal system to parts of Shariah (Islamic) Law so that Moslems “might feel more comfortable…”
