During the pro-life rescue movement–which began in the 1970’s and was crushed by the Democrats, the Catholic bishops, and nearly every Republican in Congress with the FACE Act in the early 90s, about 60k people were removed from abortion clinics and only about a dozen cops refused to become accomplices to murder.
One bishop, René Gracida, informed the police that removing an obstacle that one knows is preventing a crime is to make oneself an accomplice to that crime. He provided letters to that effect to the police to give their superiors.
A couple of bishops were arrested. A handful of other bishops gave the rescue of babies some support. Many bishops condemned the rescues. They pointed out that actually interfering with abortions was not part of the bishops’ conference’s Pastoral Plan for Pro-life Activities. They refused to address the issue of whether the arresting cops were committing sin. Some, like John May of St. Louis, went on television twice to say that the police were obligated to obey all orders, no matter what they were.
