Yes, land of the pigs, home of the lost. St. Luke and St. Matthew had plenty to say about this sort of thing:
Two violent demoniacs occupied caves (used as tombs) on the hills above the Kursi port on the Eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. Known devils dwelt in their bodies. As Jesus approached the area, the devils who dwelt in those human bodies recognized and feared Him as God. Indeed, Jesus exorcised and freed the men, having commanded their demons to enter into a new host, namely the bodies of 2000 swine. Thus possessed, the crazed herd ran riot on the cliffs and flung en masse into the sea. However, their death by drowning (pigs can swim), let alone the healing of the maniacs, failed to convert the town. In fact, “The whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they pleaded with Him to leave their region.” [Matthew 8: 30-34]
The only explanation I can think of is horrifying. One of the demons had spoken to Jesus and identified himself and his ilk as “Legion,” that is to say, an army of 5000. This would mean that, although the worst two men had been cleansed and set right by Jesus’ miracle, the rest of the town was still occupied and cursed by Satan’s “legion.” This would mean that, no matter what, they chose to defy God and wanted no part of His law and judgment.
Isn’t it somehow quite symbolic, the recent “invasion” of Rome by boars and pigs, even crossing the Tiber to Vatican Hill? Since “Rome has lost the Faith,” and Jesus has been virtually banished (as from Kursi), of course the “Legions” are set loose and running wild across the city and the world.
