EWTN: LIVE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES 2022! FESTIVAL OF THE FAMILIES WITH THE FAITHLESS FRANCIS!
The story about Pius XII is true, and rather well known. At the end if his life he came under the influence of an Italian ‘Dr. Feel-good’, who injected him with all sorts of unapproved drugs and compounds made from animal organs. When the Pope died he was in charge of the body, and did not embalm it , but used his own method of organic preservation. It didn’t work. During the viewing the Pope’s nose fell off, and one of the Swiss Guards fainted at the stench. The solution was to raise the catafalque very high, which is quite noticeable and odd in pictures. After the Novemdiales the Cardinal Camerlengo expelled the doctor from the Vatican.
Michael Davis (Crisis) pens a defense (of sorts) of the TLM in the DC Diocese: “Taking The Widow’s Mite”
https://www.crisismagazine.com/2022/taking-the-widows-mite
He says – quote –
“… One Catholic pundit—a well-known critic of the traditionalist movement, who need not be named—corroborates The Lamp’s story, but says of our widow:
The impression she thereby gave was that her reasons for wanting the traditional Latin Mass at her parish weren’t merely due to her fondness for that liturgy or her desire to attend it as part of a parish community. Rather, she seemed to be saying that *she believed that the sacraments themselves, when celebrated in the traditional Latin rite, were objectively superior to those celebrated (however reverently) in the present liturgical books*.”
– end quote – And then he goes on to say … – quote –
“I’m sure you can spot why that’s a bad-faith reading. If not, let’s try a thought experiment.”
– end quote –
It appears this Crisis author, Michael Davis is not giving this grieving widow NEARLY enough credit. He seems to be saying she just wants to keep the TLM aesthetics … the “smells and bells” as those who don’t understand like to call it. He seems to think that gives him credibility with Arbp Wilton to protect the Holy Sacrifice – “she just wants her own flavor, her preferred style”.
No, Michael, I don’t doubt for a moment, this woman whose husband just met God is *SUPREMELY* interested in the Sacramental formulas and the Liturgical rubrics that make Our Lord really, truly present on the Altar. This is why TLM is existential – it is through the Sacraments and Liturgy that we connect one generation of Catholics at Mass to all others through time.
Arbp Wilton represents those who know full well how important formulas and rubrics are. Which is why it is existential for him as well. He will never be persuaded by the aesthetics argument of those, like Michael Davis, who try to make something existential into just a preference – “why deny the grieving widow her choice in taste”? He thereby reduces this widow’s grand aspirations for her husband, now in judgement, herself with her remaining family, for deep liturgical connection to the Body of Christ in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, for the purpose of reparation and ongoing salvation … to the mere trite desire for beauty in her time of bereavement. Gross.
Call it what it is! Stop trying to ingratiate ourselves by making this seem less than it is. It is *everything*.
This conflict is about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, all its liturgies and sacramental formulas, guaranteed for all time, by Pope St. Pius V in Papal Bull, product of the Dogmatic Council of Trent, Quo Primum. It is about meeting Our Lord at Calvary, and how we meet him there, and whether we meet him with the true Body of Christ in transcendent Holy Mother Church outside of time.
Since TC, it is now mutually recognized that the two Masses are not compatible. Not organic development, Bergoglio has spoken that it is either one Mass or the other Mass – the table … or the Altar; a gathering among ourselves … or a gathering at the foot of the Cross. Different. And it means everything.
Btw, why was it “guaranteed for all time”; and why is it important that it is the product of the Xouncil of Trent?
Because if you read the preface to the Papal Bull that establishes the Mass of all Ages you see this was no ordinary project. The heroic Pope, gathered all of the best and completed the project to connect one !ass that was the fullest and best expression of every Mass that ever was, going back to the primordial beginning of the Church. Carefully sourced and connected – it produced a Mass that we can rely on as Divine in nature.
Compare that to New Mass, which carefully and admittedly *disconnects* from all that came before – disconnect, being modern, relevant, being a feature and not a bug.
New Mass is essentially ecumenical – acceptable to heretics and pagans who observe us from the outside.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (TLM) is essentially Catholic – recognizeable to every generation of Catholic who ever was or will be; unacceptable in every way to heretics and pagans who observe us from the outside.
As for Francis’ Fiesta of Families in Paul VI Hall (formerly a shrine to Pachamama on stage and a deathvaxx clinic in the narthex), it’s really hard not to gag at this latest example of addiction to self-indulgence and self-congratulation.
One day of the ambiguous lovefest presided over by the wolf in white would have been quite enough, but no, never enough time to advertise Amoris Laetitia with its “human family” nod to lavender inclusiveness and heterodox hijinks. Bet they’re selling autographed copies of the encyclical (and recent others), along with silver coins of Mother Earth and a hypodermic needle in family-friendly arm.
