Honoring St. Bart today on his feast day, martyr-saint for our time!
St. Bartolomeo is one of the most gorgeous and dramatic basilicas in Rome. The history of the place, the life and legacy of the Apostle are all tied together.
Nathaniel Bar-Tolomei was born in Cana, Galilee, scene of the renowned wedding attended by Jesus and His Mother and of the miracle of the wine (witnessed by some of the disciples, including Philip who famously introduced his friend “Bart” to Jesus). He was later known as one of the “Holy Myrrh-bearers,” saints ever mourning the events of Good Friday, albeit having witnessed the Resurrected Christ and His Ascension. Bartholomew evangelized in polytheistic Mesopotamia, Hindu India, Zoroastrian Armenia and Persia. He converted the king of Armenia by casting out a demon from the “fire temple” and then destroyed its idols, Ahura Mazda in particular. The king’s enraged brother ordered Bartholomew to be flayed alive.

Going back two centuries, there had been a great plague in Rome. The Senate was instructed to build a temple to Aesculapius, god of healing, and so sent a maritime delegation to get the deity’s statue from its shrine in Greece. Tiberina Island was the chosen temple site, separating the sick and dying from the rest of the city. To commemorate the ship that brought “health” to Rome, marble facing shored up the island’s banks to resemble prow and stern; an obelisk resembled the “mast.”

After his martyrdom, St. Bartholomew’s relics were brought by Christians to Italy. Over the Roman ruins of the Aesculapius temple, HRE Otto III built the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’ Isola. It became a great pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, the saint being known as a healer of bodies and souls. Pope Gregory XIII had a hospital built facing the famed reliquary Church. Five centuries later, Tiber Island remains a place of refuge and cure, the hospital still open and staffed by the Hospitalier Order of St. John.

Among the colossal statues of Apostles framing the nave of the Roman Basilica of St. John Lateran is St. Bart, timelessly offering a tanner’s knife and his own “hide” to the Lord. Across town in the Sistine Chapel, the saint is featured with his skin draped over his arm in the 45-foot fresco of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment. I wonder today, might he not be a signal or symbol of the Church of the EndTimes which, like the body of Christ on Calvary, has been stripped of His garments, His skin torn to shreds by the scourges and contusions of the Cross?

  2. I look forward to every new contribution from Padre Peregrino, (Fr. Nix). His latest, an excellent discussion on the natural collapse of the NewMass, some call NovusOrdo; compared to the rapid expansion within the Traditional Latin Mass, most call the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

In it he discusses the self-selectivity that decreases one, increases the other:

    – quote –

“Some people say that’s because trads are “self-selective.” This is true. Nearly every community in our mobile Western society is self-selective except those of natural consequence like birth or geography. All of life today is self-selective, so what does it say about traditionalists if they always find in their travels a TLM community that takes the faith seriously? It says they’re selecting a place that takes Divine Revelation seriously.”

    – end quote –

I can speak from personal experience – we recently moved across the country to avoid immoral, illegal, personally threatening Covid restrictions from West Coast socialist governing regimes; the location and home we selected was specifically chosen for its proximity to the TLM of the Sociey of St. Pius X. That criteria was dominant over every other subordinate consideration.

And THAT is how it goes when religion is existentially important, once again, to Catholic Faitnful who yearn to submit to their Lord and their Lady through the Roman Catholic Church and its Constant Magisterial authority through time and eternity.

Not so – those who have been trained by the RCnewC that none of it matters; personal preference, circumstance and conscience is all in all; what we see in this life is all there is; many pathways lead to your own personal truths; many different religions exist to help pilgrims on the way to find whatever they seek.

Catholics are waking up, I think, seeing they are adrift and swimming in stormy seas and looking for the Ark once again.
