“… it is possible that Judas Iscariot would have appeared to have been both pious and humanly attractive.” Barnhardt’s point of view does not concur in the least with what we see in Humanist masterpieces by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein, Tintoretto, El Greco, or Donatello. Let’s face it: In death or in life, Judas was not a pretty sight

In Classical times, it was held that happiness was the fruit of the pursuit of wisdom and perfection. Then, in His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus specified eight ways to “Beatitude” (Matthew 5:1-10). Judas would have none of this. Therefore how could he possibly be “attractive” when he was never happy (depressive, disdainful), never loving (prideful, predatory), never virtuous (unclean, immoral, reckless), never at peace (hysteric, sick with envy and greed). How on earth could this misanthrope (jealous of Jesus, poisoned by a destructive desire to take away His power and assume it for himself) appear likable and congenial? Indeed, in the final year of His ministry, Jesus said of him: “Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?” [John 6:70-71]. St. Luke recorded that “Satan had entered Judas” well before the last Passover meal (22:1-7).

“Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into the sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.” (Matthew 27:3–5)

The suicide of Judas was an ugly act of cowardice. He just would not man up to the discomfort of regret, let alone reparation. As Judas watched Jesus carried away to Pilate, the full horror of His inevitable crucifixion finally dawned on him. But Judas’s remorse led only to despair, not repentance (i.e. sorrow for sinning against the holiness of God and undergoing a penitential change of mind and heart). Repentance would have included some form of atonement; but Judas’ cowardice prevented even that. Why? Because he was a kind of witness against Jesus, if Judas admitted the wickedness of what he had done, he feared punishment as a “false witness.” Under the laws of Deuteronomy (19:16–19), he might have been crucified himself, suffering the penalty imposed on the one he caused to be falsely convicted. So Judas made no effort to defend or rescue Jesus. He had no desire to vindicate or save Jesus, only to “save” himself.

The suicide was also an act of pride. When the remorseful Judas tried to return the thirty pieces of silver, he undoubtedly went into shock to observe his business buddies, the high priests and Elders, turning their backs on him. He was shamed by their wanting nothing more to do with him now that he had fulfilled his usefulness to them. Instead of climbing to a position of power, Judas found himself nothing more than a despised, rejected outcast to Jewish society… Potters’ Field being the perfect ugly place for his grave.

The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!’ Mt 26:24

…and yet, as is his propensity to cast doubt upon the words of Our Lord (and His Bride), Francis has more than once publicly ruminated over whether or not Judas was condemned. He is a fraud.

Yes, you’re right, Mr.Hannon. While the Fathers of the Church were unanimous in affirming the eternal perdition of the traitor, Francis remains officially impartial if not actually siding with the stoolie.
On one hand, he claimed “Does this mean that Judas is in hell? I do not know” (April 8, 2020). On the other hand, Francis has spoken affectionately of Judas many times, attempting to present him as a recipient of God’s mercy. Behind the desk in his personal study, Francis in fact keeps a photo of a sculpture portraying Jesus the Good Shepherd carrying dead Judas on his shoulders as the last lost sheep. “All I ask is for you to have some mercy on our poor brother Judas… poor repentant man who did not know what to do” (April, 2016).

He knew very well what he was doing, for the Savior had continually warned him. However, he was obstinate in evil.
