In his book, The Courage to be Afraid,” Father Dominique Molinie wrote” “When someone gives himself to God, it is never a difficulty for God to shower him with all the gifts that He gave Fr. Maximilian Kolbe. The difficulty, even for God, is to find a free will that truly gives itself. There are not enough of these. It can be off by just a millimeter, but this millimeter is an abyss.”
How then to fathom the abyss of our times? Columnist Greg Maresca sees “a world set adrift, where attention spans are reduced to 280 characters and ubiquitous idolatry is universal.” More specifically, “If you are not convinced a spiritual war for the American soul is smoldering, consider the recent FBI memo leaked from their Richmond, Virginia field office. The eight-page report is titled: ‘Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities.’ … If the nation’s founders were worshipping this Easter Sunday, they would be atop the FBI’s watch list.” Meanwhile, “Christianity’s influence within America continues to diminish since few of us bother anymore with theology or theodicy.
St. Max Kolbe summed it up: “The most deadly poison of our times is indifference.”
Maxine: excellent recollection! It reminds of what I was reading yesterday from Arbp LeFebvre, in his book “spiritual journey”:
“The conception that reduces prayer to vocal prayer or mental prayer is a disastrous one. For prayer should involve all our being, like the prayer of thr angels and the elect in heaven … I have come to cast fire on the earth, and what will I but that it be kindled (Luke 12:49). The fire is the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Charity which fills the Holy Trinity and which created spiritual beings to set them afire with this charity. This burning fire is the prayer of every soul adoring his Creator and Redeemer, surrendering itself to thr holy Will, following Jesus Crucified, who offered His life in a great transport of charity toward His Father and to save souls”. (Arbp LeFebvre, Spiritual Journey, ch 5).
“Indifference”, as you say, as nothing more than forgetting who made us and for what purpose and to Whom we will one day return; “indifference” is nothing more than the rebellion of “I will not serve”.
The call to “repent” is nothing more than the call to “remember” who we are and why we are. Charity calls. Will we respond?
The author of “Civilization on Trial,” Arnold Joseph Toynbee, research professor of international history at the London School of Economics and King’s College, warned already more than a half-century ago: “While our historical horizon has been expanding vastly in both the space dimension and the time dimension, our historical vision — what we actually do see, in contrast to what we now could see if we chose — has been contracting rapidly to the narrow field of what a horse sees between its blinkers or what a U-boat commander sees through his periscope.”
“…Our world has risen to an unprecedented degree of humanitarian feeling. There is now a recognition of the human rights of people of all classes, nations, and races; yet at the same time we have sunk to perhaps unheard-of depths of class warfare and racialism. These bad passions find vent in cold-blooded, scientifically planned cruelties; and the two incompatible states of mind and standards of conduct are to be seen today, side by side, not merely in the same world, but sometimes in the same country and even in the same soul.”
“Of the twenty-two civilizations that have appeared in human history, nineteen of them collapsed when they reached the moral state the United States is in now.”
Steve Skojec wrote an interesting little explanation for why he left the Catholic religion and became an atheist.

He likely thinks his reasoning is unique to himself and his particular circumstances. It’s not. His logic is literally as old as recorded history; likely it’s the logic of the fallen angels themselves – “Your plan makes no logical sense; I will not serve”. Everyone who claims not to believe always has various layers of anger in their “certainty” … “it’s not fair; what kind of God is it who would do this; I am better off without “him” … etc”.
What ge misses, what they all miss, is that God demands obedience within the Sacraments, and only within the RCC Sacraments, so that *He can meet us, commune with us, “sup” with us, heal us, love us, transform us … not instantly, like a magical spell, but over time as with a healthy marriage that learns about each other through LONG, HARD EXPERIENCE*.
Not according to works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us. (Titus 3:5)
May God bless all of *us* (including Steve) who struggle with the powers of this world while we quickly approach that moment in which we prostrate before the Throne of God and give an account for our gifts. It is desperately hard to remain on the path that leads life. Few find it, fewer remain on it. Run the race and persevere because our enemy never sleeps.
Scrolling through the responses to Steve on Twitter, and I see him as the very public embodiment of so many who have demoralized and fallen away under this false and intensely anti-Catholic Pontificate … all the responses to him are as I’d expect. But then I came to this gem of a response by “OldW”, who gave most needed advice to us all (not just Steve) struggling during these dreadful times of Catholic apostasy from top to bottom:
“The ONLY solution to ALL our spiritual problems – existential, theological, moral (especially as regards Sin, Justice & Hell) is the steady, gentle, gaze of love of Our Lady. So much of our distress would be avoided if we simply did that!
Regarde l’Étoile!”
And he linked to this beautiful song about Mary, the star – Look At The Star”

The music is French – translation here (it’s worth following the lyrics imo):

Beautiful. And that is how God works – light from unexpected sources, for those willing to see, in faith.
My QC was bad: the link above presets to the end of the song. This link is better, from the beginning. “Regarde l’étoile“ … Sorry for the clutter.
